Hong Kong police move to forcibly clear thousands of protesters occupying the area around and inside

BREAKING: Hong Kong police began forcibly removing protesters who forced their way into the territory’s legislature Monday in an unprecedented act of civil disobedience. The action came after protesters roamed the building for hours, spraying graffiti, removing portraits of pro-Beijing officials and wrecking meeting rooms. Here’s what we know:

●Protesters removed metal fencing, smashed glass doors at the Legislative Council building and began to occupy the complex.

●Police later vowed to “sweep” the building using “reasonable force” and urged all to leave, but demonstrators remained and promised to continue unless Hong Kong has universal suffrage.

●The official commemoration of the handover featuring both Hong Kong and Chinese central government officials was moved indoors, officially due to “inclement weather.”

●Police warned people not to join the march over fears of a “safety threat,” but tens of thousands showed up in a procession that again shut down roads.
