(10,749 posts)9500 members of this group.
This release observes that not all members of the group are service BP agents.
BP has a mandated strength of 21,370 agents. Let's say that 75% of the members of the FB group are members. That's more than 7,100 active agents. That's 1/3 - 33% of active BP agents. True, an assumption, but at 33% I would conclude that these folks are representative of the BP.
Also, you gotta love the wording: ". . . does a great disservice to all Border Patrol agents, the overwhelming majority of whom perform their duties honorably." Wow, the overwhelming majority. Quite a goal there. So, what, 25% of BP agents do not perform their duties honorably?
Every single one of those FB group members who are found to be members must be relieved of duty. And every one of them found to have posted racist, misogynist, or otherwise vile comments must be fired. Immediately.
Won't happen, of course. Because we are no longer a nation with any moral compass.

(16,120 posts)so there will be a significant (probably about equal) number of people who hold these beliefs on the job, but who are not on Facebook or are not part of this secret group on Facebook.
Attitudes like this group appears to promote do not grow in a vacuum, there is something about the culture of the agency that either selects for these attitudes in hiring or perpetuates such views once on the job.
My guess is that the bar for behavior has been lowered significantly in the last couple of years and that the job tends to draw people who really want to use their hate on the job.

1/ We got our hands on screenshots from a secret FB group for current and former Border Patrol agents. They joke about migrant deaths, including the death of a teen in their care, and post racist, sexist memes.
Here's what we found.
👇👇👇
2/These are responses from #BorderPatrol agents to a post of a news story about a 16-year-old Guatemalan migrant who died in May while in custody at a Border Patrol station in Weslaco, Texas
3/Here, agents joke about throwing burritos at Latino members of Congress who are scheduled to visit a troubled Border Patrol facility today.
4/Other members of the group posted multiple explicit, doctored images.
5/We've linked many of the participants to apparently legitimate FB profiles belonging to Border Patrol agents, including a supervisor based in El Paso, Texas, and an agent in Eagle Pass, Texas. So far, we've been unable to reach the group members who made the postings.
6/ Created in August 2016, the group is called Im 10-15 and boasts roughly 9,500 members. (10-15 is Border Patrol code for aliens in custody.
7/ A staffer for Representative Escobar called the posts about her and Ocasio-Cortez are vile and sexist.
8/ Furthermore, the comments made by Border Patrol agents towards immigrants, especially those that have lost their lives, are disgusting and show a complete disregard for human life and dignity.
Representative Escobar staffer
9/ It confirms some of the worst criticisms of Customs and Border Protection, said the head of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.
These are clearly agents who are desensitized to the point of being dangerous to migrants and their co-workers.
10/ The Border Patrol Facebook group is only the most recent example of some law enforcement and military personnel behaving badly in digital spaces they believed were private, but it's not the only one.

I do not know how to bring the images over on this cheap phone. You can go to the source to see tbe FB posts.

CBP is a part of DHS.
Here's the really ironic part: when you pass legally through US borders or when you apply for a job with the government, DHS can demand access to your social media accounts.

If DHS then accesses your social media accounts and finds that you've been posting threats against members of the US government or against American citizens or otherwise threatening acts of terrorism, you will be detained and arrested.

And yet, here are employees of that very same government agency, the very one empowered to screen YOUR social media accounts without a warrant, engaged in the very same behaviors that would get YOU arrested as a suspected terrorist.
So, why are THEY not in jail?

(38,958 posts)and bring in not only the heads of the departments but some of the lower level supervisors and agents that are linked to this Facebook Group. I suspect that they would not enjoy their time sitting in a House Investigation Hearing being grilled by elected officials while being broadcast on C-Span.
