While it's nice to believe we're saluting a manifestation of Enlightenment ideals, it's hard to forget what those framers of the nation intended was independence, self-governance and full citizenship only to white men above a certain station in life. I'm glad the framework was flexible enough to adapt in the ways we have but I regret the cultural issues that hold us back from a greater reality.

Here in the reddest portion of America, public celebrations are an immersion into Christianity-laced jingoism. In Trump's America that will be amped up.

Besides, the weather here now is very difficult on my health. It's a time of year I dread mostly.

I've got better things to do than watch Mango Mussolini's salute to self.
