Is this torture? I think it is. Not rhetorical torture, but actual torture.

Holding people in a cell so overcrowded that there is no ability to sit or lay down. Standing room only jail cells are now the American way?

Not in my name.

But back to the question: Is making a person stand while in custody an act of torture?

Taking a child away from its mother is torture.

Not giving that terrified child comfort is torture.

Keeping lights on all the time is torture.

Not providing medical care is torture.

Not providing a shower is torture.

Being forced to drink toilet water is torture.

All of it.

the toilet water. Having researched tiny homes a bit there is a growing trend to have that type of faucet sink above the toilet tank. In that application, it serves two purposes. 1. It saves space in a tiny space by not requiring the space for a seperate sink. 2. It conserves water because the water draining from the sink spills into the toilet tank where it can be used to flush the toilet. The water feeding the sink comes from a fresh water line. The same feed that would supply any sink or a water fountain.

From the photos I saw it looked like these toilets were stainless steel and something you might find in a prison. So with those asthetics and with an image in my head that many people might be using this toilet, drinking water from the fresh water faucet atop its tank might be disgusting. However I believe this is fresh water and not toilet water that we are talking about.

However the treehugger in me would use that setup if I ever build or buy a tiny house.

8. Somehow I think these private for profit prisons are the farthest thing possible from a tiny house

In one instance the babies and children came down with lice so all the beds were removed and they were left on the concrete floor. Guards have complained of the stink, but only to mock the victims. A cell full of weeping girls had a box of tampons thrown at them -- I wonder if they were weeping because they were bloody and had no way to care for themselves.

When we see that a cell has one toilet out in the open, and that the cell is so packed that no one can lie down or sit down -- I seriously doubt any thought was given to the design of the toilet facilities, especially as no one has access to showers or even hand washing...

11. I am with you. I was just commenting that the sink faucet combos above the tank exist.

If that is what they have at these facilities, better to be accurate about it. The squalid arrangements with overcrowding are indefensible.

It was one of the more prominent allegations leveled against shrub and his thugs regarding treatment of people at Guantánamo.

The difference here is that no one is actually prevented from sitting. If there literally isn't enough room for everyone to sit at the same time, they can take turns. So it's not technically "prolonged standing", as in Guantánamo where people were electrically shocked or otherwise punished if they stopped standing.

That said, it would still qualify as torture. People need a certain minimum amount of personal space.

I'm flummoxed why the people that are witnessing this first-hand have not called the FBI to come arrest these people. I'd certainly be behind bars if I committed 0.0001% of the crimes these guys are committing.

And yes, you could assert that the FBI would likely do nothing, but that would be a scandal in itself.
