Democracy is messy.

It cannot function if people refuse to compromise.

It tests the resilience of a democracy when there is a "hyper-partisan" in the White House. If Donald Trump is anything, he is "hyper-partisan". He has managed to even make July 4th a partisan event.
He may be terrible at addition, but he is great at division.

A democracy is tied together by different interests compromising for a common goal. The basic goal is to keep the government at peace, and to provide for the general welfare of its people. We are all in the same boat. There are fragile threads that hold us together.

A democracy can be destroyed. It is not written in stone that a democracy is here forever. When issues are not resolved, such as immigration, race, abortion, religion, or foreign intervention, then the fabric starts to tear. The people become more and more divided.

The people must unite behind a certain idea in order to keep the democracy strong. July the 4th has always been one of those "ideas" that people have united behind. That was the day they would fly the flag and put "politics" aside.

Now, even that looks at risk.

That's the key sentence.

The flip-side is that when that common goal is threatened by an opposing ideology that has somehow gained power, compromise is the antithesis of democracy.

The repubs are certainly attempting to tear apart our democracy but they have their tactics correct.

The Dems should be just as solid in opposition to ANYTHING the repubs propose, full stop, until we extinguish this threat.

But it is they that refuse to compromise. By making impossible demands upon the democracy and its leaders. That is asking too much from anyone or everyone. If they say, "Well, we challenge your democracy", then there can be no compromise. Neither side can compromise. We are near that point, it seems to me?

Well actually I think we are past that.

The repub party's every action relates that they are challenging not only OUR democracy but democracy as an ideal.

Refusing to compromise is one tactic they use to undermine our democracy.

Short of them coming out and honestly stating clearly that this is their goal, I am very comfortable with the conclusion that it must be, based strictly on their actions and the inevitable results those actions could only result in.

I doubt they would ever give us fair warning that they are challenging our democracy by explicitly stating it, that would only weaken their chances to succeed, in fact keeping up a vocal pretense of respecting democracy would be a more likely scenario but they hardly even do that anymore. But we can clearly see their actions and I don't see how any other conclusion is possible.

For the people in America who want to retain our democracy, compromising with the republican party, engaging with them at all, is clearly suicide.

It would be like befriending a murderous dictator..oh wait..
