Trump appears to contradict officials, says census citizenship question not abandoned

BY JORDAN FABIAN AND JACQUELINE THOMSEN - 07/03/19 11:19 AM EDT

President Trump stirred confusion on Wednesday by saying that reports his administration is stopping its effort to include a citizenship question in the 2020 census are “FAKE,” even though multiple departments have said the question is being dropped.

“The News Reports about the Department of Commerce dropping its quest to put the Citizenship Question on the Census is incorrect or, to state it differently, FAKE! We are absolutely moving forward, as we must, because of the importance of the answer to this question,” he tweeted.

The Supreme Court ruled last week that the question could not be added, but said the Commerce Department could try and do so later by providing a different explanation.

But the Trump administration announced on Tuesday it would not move forward with the effort, with the Commerce and Justice departments saying the decision had been made to print census materials without the citizenship question.

“The Census Bureau has started the process of printing the decennial questionnaires without the question. My focus, and that of the bureau and the entire department, is to conduct a complete and accurate census,” Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said Tuesday in a statement.

Which should be disturbing and impeachment-worthy in its own right.

Could be another case of part of his admin just acting independently. The man has no idea what a good portion of his people are doing or saying most of the time. Wouldn't be the first time they just done something on their own to prevent Trump from blatantly taking another illegal/unconstitutional action.

I received a notice from the Census Bureau with instructions for completing the form on line.

The first set of questions were about citizenship. They even wanted me to verify the year my wife was naturalized.

The question is being asked despite the court’s ruling.

The census bureau does conduct other surveys from time to time.

Edit: Actually it couldn't be the census. That isn't conducted until next year.

The Supreme Court ruled that the question cannot be on the form so you can't answer a question that isn't there.
