Bastille Day has real meaning to the French and their history is as unique as tragic.

We were the First modern Republic, which means more than most on even DU Understand. But we did not bring down a king. Just ran him off. And without France we could not have done so.

Our example spurred to French to do what no nation had done. The people overthrew a king. Not a rival for power, the people.

Yeah, it went downhill from there. What with Napoleon and several revivals of Royalty. But hell, all of Europe fought them.

But the republican ideal never died.

God I love France. Wish I could afford to go more often.
