Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez snapped at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for criticizing her and a few other left-wing Democrats, renewing a war of words between a rising liberal star and a veteran congressional leader.
"That public 'whatever' is called public sentiment. And wielding the power to shift it is how we actually achieve meaningful change in this country," the New York Democrat said Saturday about Pelosi after the New York Democrat said Ocasio-Cortez and her inner circle of liberal freshman Democrats were just "four people."
"I find it strange when members act as though social media isnt important. They set millions of dollars on fire to run TV ads so people can see their message. I havent dialed for dollars *once* this year, & have more time to do my actual job. Yet wed rather campaign like its 2008," Ocasio-Cortez added.

In a New York Times interview published Saturday, Pelosi dismissed the influence of Ocasio'Cortez's "Squad," which includes Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, and Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts All these people have their public whatever and their Twitter world, Pelosi said. But they didnt have any following. Theyre four people and thats how many votes they got.

(8,839 posts)It is tiring to hear Democratic leadership again criticizing the so-called "left".
That Left bashing probably cost us the 2016 POTUS election more than devious Russians.

You can't expect the rest of the party to cater to a small segment who value idealism over pragmatism when it takes a coalition left right and center to win.
Bettie

That only the ever rightward shifting "center" matters.
Pragmatism would be listening and valuing all the voices in the party instead of always appeasing the so-called center out of the belief that the Left has no other choice.
Disclaimer: I have voted for the Democrat in every election since I was 18 years old. Local, off year, presidential year, every one except for one local when I was in a hospital following a c-section.

If you are in a card game you have to play the hand that is dealt. Win then the deal is passed to you. Lose and you get nothing.
The deal for 2020 is it will take a coalition of different views to beat trump. We cant go left because some leader told us to.

I'm sick of hearing that only centrists matter, that "the left" is worthless and should sit down and shut up.

(8,144 posts)one has to make alliances within that same power structure one dismissed, attacked, and over-rode. Here, without some powerful friends in high places one recruits or pressures to the effort, one is marginalized.
The irony of democracy (title of a book) is that eventually so-called democracy absorbs dissidence
into its political machinery. Hence, Tom Hayden, once a radical anti-war activist, one of the Chicago 7, marries Jane Fonda, and puts the suit on.
Examples proliferate. Eldridge Cleaver, one of the most prominent members of the Black Panthers,
joined the Church of Latter Day Saints and became a prominent Republican.
I dont believe AOC can maintain influence without educating herself much more thoroughly in the very establishment Democratic Party power politics she claims she doesnt need.
Public sentiment is a good start. She has a long way to go before she can take Pelosi on.

(40,220 posts)AOC needs to turn down the volume. Speaker Pelosi has been a leader in the Democratic Party for decades. AOC has been a member of Congress since January. AOC needs to learn that hubris is not a virtue and not a quality found in effective leaders.

She's a little to full of herself. Social media is what it is but Congress doesn't work that way yet. Their are rituals and procedures and ways to do things. Social media followers don't count as votes.
Guess who will have no problem of getting re-elected? The Speaker has tremendous power and may want to divvy it out to a challenger for AOC who is no match for her right now.

(14,176 posts)I feel like this is a tempest in a teapot and, really, something both are doing for their respective audiences. IMO the progressive caucus folks know that when it comes down to it, Speaker Pelosi has their backs and will do whatever she can to protect them. And Speaker Pelosi also has to play a game of distancing herself from them in public because she wants to protect the moderates in the caucus from being lumped in with AOC, Omar, etc., so she's doing a delicate dance. I trust AOC knows this, too.

It has effects on everybody: increasing isolation, depression, anxiety, addiction, escapism."
The last line about 2008 puzzles me because I thought the Obama campaign famously used social media to a degree nobody had done before.
