1. It's tough to get an arraignment done on a Sunday

He's probably in the cooler until tomorrow at the least. Also, the indictment should be unsealed at that time, so we'll have a good look at the alleged facts.

He was picked up at the airport upon returning from a trip abroad, though. The search of the mansion did not involve his arrest.

2. Doubtful prosecutors and court allowed for bail. So he's likely sitting in jail.

The matter of bail has not yet been addressed, but boy, if someone was ever a "flight risk", I gotta vote for JEFFREY EPSTEIN

Daily Beast:

"Epstein, who owns a New York City mansion and an island in the Caribbean, was being held at the federal lockup in Manhattan ahead of his court date."

SDNY is Southern (federal court) District of New York, so they've filed under federal law.

The New York STATE Attorney General can file charges under state law, and given the apparent involvement of NYPD in the raid on Epstein's home (based on the press photos), presumably the Manhattan District Attorney could file state charges as well.

And of course, the federal pardon power doesn't reach to state or local cases.

And there's also the obvious issue of political fallout, if Barr tries to gum up the works, or Trump is deluded enough to pardon his good buddy Jeff; even as depraved as the majority of GOP lawmakers are these days, they're not going to go on the record of favoring easy treatment for pimps.

Good bet that Acosta resigns to spend more time with his family sooner, rather than later.

Epstein was charged with crimes that occured in Florida only. Federal charges were dropped. That opened the door for SDNY.

Today on one of the cable shows, a guest said that some victims are saying they were flown to NY. Assuming that's true, then there could well have been crimes committed in NY state and/or NYC city. NY either doesn't have or just repealed a prohibition on double jeopardy for state crimes.

Glenn Kirschner on MSBNC said the prosecutors will probably ask for no bail, first because Epstein poses a risk to the community (registered child sex offender) and second because he is a flight risk.

20. Right now, that's hard to say. Sex trafficking did not become a crime in NYS until 2007...

There may also be statute of limitation issues.

If Epstein was tried on sex trafficking activities by the feds, whatever the outcome, it's likely that NYS's double-jeopardy laws would prevent him from being charged with the same offense (assuming that they were crimes in NYS at the time). NYS passed a law recently which waives double-jeopardy, but only in a limited situation, i.e. when someone receives a presidential pardon for a crime.

that this indictment is related to the Florida cases? I doubt that the Florida case gets reopened. The indictment against Epstein is still sealed, why couldn't it be entirely new charges?
