arraignment... just saying.. it looks like there are a LOT of powerful people caught up with him.. they better have 24 hour guards watching him so something strange does not happen... I hope they have him in the pits of the jail for the next 25 years .. but not before he spills all he knows.. karma has knocked on some really big doors I think..

As I understand it, if Epstein accepts a pardon then he can no longer plead the 5th amendment. (It's the same thing as pleading guilty to the charges.) He must testify to all the stuff he's done, plus the stuff he is aware of other people doing. That would mean the many celebrities who have attended his parties over the years.
We talked about the repercussions of presidential pardons whenever it came up for Flynn, Cohen, Stone, Manafort, etc. Anybody who gets a pardon could turn state's evidence in other investigations or trials.
I'm not a lawyer, so I'm only saying stuff I learned from other posters on DU. Please set me straight if this is incorrect.

(1,376 posts)SDNY is Southern (federal court) District of New York, so they've filed under federal law.
The New York STATE Attorney General can file charges under state law, and given the apparent involvement of NYPD in the raid on Epstein's home (based on the press photos), presumably the Manhattan District Attorney could file state charges as well.
And of course, the federal pardon power doesn't reach to state or local cases.
And there's also the obvious issue of political fallout, if Barr tries to gum up the works, or Trump is deluded enough to pardon his good buddy Jeff; even as depraved as the majority of GOP lawmakers are these days, they're not going to go on the record of favoring easy treatment for pimps.
Good bet that Acosta resigns to spend more time with his family sooner, rather than later.

(61,695 posts)would it still be "conspiracy BS" to you? People who cause Putin problems tend to be found on the sidewalk, dead from defenestration, or even shot in cold blood in front of witnesses.
There are people leading our government that are either Putin's friends or his useful idiots.

(15,437 posts)Not just Trump, but many others. Federal judges, states judges, and very high-level politicians.
Even if Trump never bought girls from him, what if he knew about it and didn't say anything to the police? He had to have at least known. That goes for Epstein's other friend too. They knew.
