(9,481 posts)But I thought the issue now is that Trump was putting the screws to Europe by locking European companies out of the U.S. market if they did business in Iran.

(4,602 posts)So far Europe has kept its commitments to Iran so Iran doesnt really have a legal basis for what its doing, but on a pragmatic level, they see the writing on the wall and are responding to it.

(82,849 posts)Any third nation that deals with Iran in violation of those U.S. sanctions, gets sanctioned too. Iran would like to continue being in compliance with multi-nation treaty, but Trump has made that impossible.
By the way, if you read or listen to or watch the reporting on the growing Iranian stockpile, you could be forgiven for thinking that nukes are going to fly just any minute now on orders from Tehran. Right now the uranium the Iranians have is about one twentieth the refinement required to make a nuclear weapon. In other words, while Iran is in technical violation of the treaty, it's nowhere near the capability of fashioning a nuclear weapon.
