A man pretending to be a police officer was arrested after he pulled over a deputy

A Florida man allegedly pretending to be a police officer pulled over the wrong car.

Barry Lee Hastings Jr., was driving a black vehicle with white and amber lights late Thursday night when he spotted the car of an off-duty Lee County sheriff's deputy and activated emergency lights, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said.

Hastings told the deputy he needed to "slow down."

The deputy twice asked Hastings for his credentials. Hastings responded that he was "a law enforcement officer and his credentials were at the office," the sheriff's office said.

"He told the deputy he could follow him back to the 'station' so he could obtain and show him his credentials," the sheriff's office said.

Hastings tried to flee after the deputy called 911 but was stopped and arrested by a Hillsborough County sheriff's deputy.

A functional siren box and light set up similar to the ones used by Hillsborough County officers and a CB radio were found in the car, the office said.

Women have been raped and murdered all over the county because of men doing this.

How Florida's Proud Open Government Laws Lead to the Shame of "Florida Man" News Stories

I'm not vouching for that theory; I just don't know enough to have an informed opinion.

A Google search for

"Florida Man" "Sunshine Laws"

turns up more hits than you could shake a stick at.

Unless, of course, you happen to be one of the rare people who are born, from time to time, with an innate, preternatural facility with stick shaking. I gotta say, those people kind've freak me out, man.

Was he intending to rape and murder the male deputy or was he just having fun pretending to be a cop? I'm not making light of the fact that sometimes men, in Florida and elsewhere, pretend to be cops in order to assault women, but this doesn't seem to have been one of those cases.

a la the Hillside Strangler cousins in California (Bianchi and Buono), who pretended to be police, stopping their victims on highways.

This happens all over the US, and women have been raped and murdered in many states by men doing this.

All the folks "Florida Manning" this incident -- and other incidents -- are basically handwaving away the seriousness of incidents and crimes. I am frankly tired of it. It excuses what happened.

just wanted to get people to stop speeding. he pulled over a male deputy.

i don't mean to offend. it's just so often it's a florida man, and i don't mean a pervert/murderer - i mean inexplicably wacky actions.

Fake officer tries to pull over a real undercover cop in Florida

Matthew Erris was arrested on a charge of impersonating a public officer. (Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office photo)

Authorities say a Florida man impersonating an officer flipped the red and blue lights on his SUV while unknowingly trying to stop a car with a real officer.

The Tampa Bay Times reports 26-year-old Matthew Erris was arrested on a charge of impersonating a public officer.

An arrest report says Erris turned on the red and blue lights on his SUV in Plant City, Florida to try to stop the car in front of him.

The driver was an undercover Hillsborough County sheriff's detective in an unmarked car. He didn't pull over. Instead he called dispatchers to alert other deputies, who later stopped Erris.

Usually you hear of these stories where they stop young unsuspecting women and then coerce them into a sexual favour in exchange for letting them go on some trumped up charge.

Stopping a male, is it extortion for money in exchange of letting him go? For a homosexual favour? Which would be a risk as 90%? of males are heterosexual.

Was it just to experience the power rush? Seems like a huge risk for that.
