Republican Governor is trying to destroy his state's university system

Alaska’s governor is trying to destroy its universities. The state may never recover
by Cas Mudde (The Guardian)

Mike Dunleavy (R) wants to cut the Alaskan university system by $130m – a staggering 41% of its budget.

In a shocking example of political overreach, Dunleavy announced 182 line-item vetoes to his state’s 2020 budget last week. He thereby cut the budget proposed by the Alaska legislature by almost $410m in general funds. Almost one-third of the cuts will come from the University of Alaska system, which will see its budget cut by $130m – a staggering 41%.

Dunleavy has defended his draconian budget cuts as a “policy choice” to increase the Permanent Fund dividend Alaskans receive each year – a major election promise he made during his campaign. While this might be good news for drug dealers – research shows a 14% increase in substance-abuse incidents the day after the annual payout – there is little evidence that the dividends actually boost the state economy. But the University of Alaska system does.

Koch/Heritage/and Freedom Party key goals. Only the Gentry will have access to a Education just to be absorbed into the Family Circle of Wealth.

These suckers have for the most part, killed off all the free to public access to even a Vocational and Trade School. We are dealing with this at this point with a Grand Kid who wants to learn a Trade. The GOP screwed up Colorado so that the options are a 50k so called Trade School or get on a waiting list at a Public semi funded Vocational School. Which is now damn expensive do to massive State Vocational budget cuts.

by a long shot.

The state's glaciers are all receding at a rapid rate, the Arctic ocean ice fields are disappearing permafrost is softening, and the methane release from the tundra muskeg is an ENORMOUS contributor to atmospheric warming.

It hit 90 degrees in Anchorage for the first time last week. Dunleavy is an idiot.

The gov is cutting education so that the socialistic handouts will be greater!

Honestly, sending Alaska residents regular checks to share the wealth of the state's wealth is the epitome of Socialism. How the rethugs don't see that is for people smarter than me to figure out.
