SCOTUS already said no. Congress will not authorize it. But we have long passed a point were there is a legal authority or Rule of Law in this country. He will have the Census printed with the Citizen question, it will be used, and there is no one in power to stop it.

ACLU has said they will fight any executive census action.

(11,804 posts)I think his argument would be something along the lines of "The Supreme Court was going to approve the question, but we didn't get into them in a form they could approve. So since we knew they would eventually approve it, and because there is a time limit, we are going to go ahead and do it. Let the Democrats challenge it in the courts if they want; but if it's on the census there's not much they can do."
It depends on whether the congress would act on this (i don't think so) or if Roberts will be offended at having the process short cutted (possible - but nothing I would put any money on (if I had any money)).

I have seen no evidence since this Orange Asshole took office that anyone in government will do anything to stop him.
He violates the Law and the Constitution on a daily basis with no repercussions.

(33,599 posts)My whole point is that relying on the Courts or some other part of Government to stop on this him is overly optimistic.
I see many say it will be taken care of when the Courts rule against him. He is ignoring the Courts and will continue to do so.
More than a few here don't see that.

You're correct, not all in public service are so readily corrupted...the problem is that they're not likely to stand up and fight either.

(26,754 posts)The ruling didn't say that it's unconstitutional to include a citizenship question in the Census... in fact, the majority concluded that such a question did not run afoul of the enumeration clause... the court just said that they didn't believe the stated reasoning that it was to better enforce voting-rights laws.

(46,150 posts)in court, so can an Executive Order.

1. File a complaint that includes a stay/temporary restraining order.
2. While the matter is being analyzed by the court, make claim that the deadline to print is too late to put a citizenship question on it and the point of the EO is moot.

Plus, same issue: Trump would have to have a valid reason to put it on and we have evidence that he wants it for re-districting congressional seats.

(8,010 posts)It sure isn't a fight like that, because he thrives on fights. When we punish our kids, we make the punishment something that makes them regret what they did. Impeachment won't do that. The only thing that might affect him is to take away his money or his freedom, something that can only be done after he leaves office.
edhopper
(33,599 posts)I know there are opinions both ways, mine is that impeachment hurts him in the election. His followers will back him no matter what. But the percentage of independents he needs will move away from him.
radical noodle
(8,010 posts)that "exonerates" him in the Senate will affect independents that way. It could be seen as purely partisan.
Stealing the next election is a real possibility and avoiding that is where we need to put our fight. JMHO.
