Politico correspondent Tim Alberta suggests in his upcoming book American Carnage that Ryan didnt seek reelection because he couldnt bear continuing to work with Trump, according to The Washington Post, which obtained a copy of the book ahead of its Tuesday publication.
Ryan saw retirement as an escape hatch, Alberta wrote, according to the Post, and told Alberta that Trump didnt know anything about government and that he didnt like Trumps behavior.
I told myself I gotta have a relationship with this guy to help him get his mind right, Ryan recalled in the book, the Post reported. Because, Im telling you, he didnt know anything about government .?.?. I wanted to scold him all the time.
A spokesperson for Ryan pushed back against the idea that the former GOP speaker retired because of Trump, telling The Hill that Ryan has been very clear that he retired because he wanted to spend more time being a father and a husband.
According to the Post, Ryan also told Alberta that weve gotten so numbed by it all, apparently responding to Trumps behavior, adding: Dont call a woman a horse face. Dont cheat on your wife. Dont cheat on anything. Be a good person. Set a good example.
He also told Alberta he believed Trumps actions were getting more problematic, the Post said.
Those of us around him really helped to stop him from making bad decisions. All the time, Ryan reportedly said. We helped him make much better decisions, which were contrary to kind of what his knee-jerk reaction was. Now I think hes making some of these knee-jerk reactions.

And while I was very glad to see him gone and felt he was a total jerk, to piss on the deterioration he enabled while he WAS there from a safer distance shows his utter lack of...intestinal fortitude.
He has been and always will be a weak ass, shady charactered, self-serving, self-loving spooge. And now, he needs attention to help sell someones book.
You failed, Ryan. As a politician and a person.

(32,084 posts)Jeezus, he's so full of shit. If he was offended by Trump's behavior, why did he enable it, by letting him run roughshod all over the place? I don't doubt the things he says about Trump. But, as to his being offended by him, yeah. Right. You're full of shit, you slimy, little twerp. Or, at the very least, a big, fat fucking coward. Your inaction speaks volumes about you.

Ryan also issued a strong defense of Trumps action in a closed-door meeting with Republicans on Tuesday morning, according to some lawmakers in attendance. The House speaker acknowledged the controversy surrounding the ban and told his members they were likely to see protests in their districts.
Ryans backing of Trump came as many Republicans criticized the new administration for failing to consult Congress on an action that produced chaos and uncertainty across the US government. Ryan said he only learned of the executive order as it was being issued, while characterizing the confusion stemming from its abrupt rollout as regrettable.
