It's a well-documented love-hate relationship. Trump holds the "evangelicals" in contempt, but he needs their votes, so he throws them the occasional bone and fake-talks his support, and they ultimately get what they want, so it's an "unholy" win-win.
They're not gonna rock the boat. Even if they give lip service to the humanitarian aspects of this, they're not gonna rock the boat. Period. Yes, they played an unfortunate role in putting him in office. But they're getting a return on their investment, and they're not going to jeopardize future "gains."
No, I am not being "critical" of Speaker Pelosi. But all evidence points to the need for a different strategy. On one hand, this would expose their hypocrisy. Beyond that, it's not going to change the situation. This is crack cocaine to the "base," and every move Trump is making is in the name of locking in their 2020 votes.

"I'm going to appeal to people of faith, the faith-based organizations to appeal to the president ... they put him in office and they have a better voice for this," Nancy Pelosi tells @jparkabc when asked if she will appeal to Trump to put off ICE raids (link: https://abcn.ws/2KwhPqb) abcn.ws/2KwhPqb

Appeal to Republicans - ha!
Appeal to MAGAts - no, they love this crap...they would put them all in dog crates if they could
Appeal to the evangelicals and conservative Catholics to pressure Trump - probably won't work, but worth a try

He's got something they want. they have something he wants.
This could only get in the way of that. I struggle with giving them any credit for "principles" beyond their agenda.

(18,837 posts)I've posted this several times on DU, but back in the 70s, a reporter asked Hugh Hefner if he understood that the young women who surrounded him were primarily after his money, and without skipping a beat, he replied "Who CARES?"
Same with the evangelicals. Of course they know who and what Trump is, as well as how he sees them, but they're getting what they want.

(58,662 posts)Religion and politics has thrived on that one for millennia. For much of recorded history, religion and politics were basically the same thing, or at least were run by the same organizations. Our brief attempt to separate them seems to be coming unraveled a bit.

(67,109 posts)they wish. I looked up the 10 commandments one day ... wow, endless variations and many things added. Eons ago when I was in Sunday School, they seemed short and succinct. ... now, sometimes an encyclopedia of sorts.

(58,662 posts)Back in the day, the priests were the ones who copied the books, and most importantly the Bible. Normal private citizens couldn't afford books or bibles. Control the book, control the message, control the people.
That's why the Church fought the printing press and wanted to control them. Gutenberg triggered the Reformation and the Enlightenment as much as anyone.

It's a complete joke how Christian organizations have been bastardized, adulterated and perverted to what they are now. Send me your "prayer money" for a new jet. It's ridiculous.

(67,109 posts)It is for the most part just the opposite of what I learned as a kid in Sunday School eons ago. I haven't had anything to do with religion for decades, since I find much of religion now disgusting.
