It is not surprising is it? But at the same time one always hopes that they show some glimmer of humanity and cannot help feeling slightly deflated when once again they demonstrate what soulless individuals they are.
This supposed committed christian examines the detainees at the border living in fenced cages, overcrowded, dirty, unable to lie down, underfed, in stinking conditions - and all he has to say is that the facilities are overwhelmed. Now, got to tell you that this level of viciousness of thought and very demonstrable ability to actively not see the humanity in these refugees, has very scary resonance with history.
The administration is actively othering and has no care at all of the outcome of this detention, because they do not see these refugees as fully human, and when that happens it is seemingly very easy for this administration and their enablers to rationalise stripping this community of their human rights, including being detained in humanitarian conditions. It is not hyperbole to suggest that this right wing nasty can be realistically accused of treating refugees as 'untermenschen'...as the Nazis thought of the Jews. ... that they didn't owe them human treatment because they were 'lesser men'.
That is the essence of the fascist; the fascist does not see the humanity of the other, they have become lesser.
Pence and Graham yesterday showed no concern for the detainees they saw contained in inhumane and desperate conditions. They thought only of the problems for the facilities, issues that have arisen because of this administrations policy to create these conditions. And then to put the icing on the cake he uses racist dog whistle rhetoric of being 'overwhelmed' which plays straight into their narrative of hordes crossing the border intent on hurting all those lovely white people...
Thank goodness Godwins Law has been suspended, cause...
