General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI have no hard facts to back this up, but believe it to be true, nonetheless.
The continuing refusal to impeach Trump---while we concede that he has committed crimes---will cost the Democratic nominee many votes in the 2020 election---possibly enough to re-elect Trump.
While nearly all who post here will vote for the Democrat---whoever that may be---there are, I believe, literally millions of people who are professional cynics when it come to politics. These are the folks who may not actually say "Both sides are the same: self-serving politicians", but they reflexively nod affirmatively when they hear it. They are prime candidates for SOMEONE to persuade that while Trump may be an immoral ass concerned only with his own power and profit, so are the Democrats. So, the social media will ask, why vote?
Impeachment is either our Constitutional duty under these circumstances or it is a meaningless provision in an increasingly meaningless ancient document.

Whatever political calculus Nancy Pelosi professes does not make sense; forget about justice and right and wrong, even criminal, actions by Trump, avoiding impeachment harms Democratic candidates in 2020 elections.

(6,143 posts)When Pelosi took the impeachment of Bush off the table. How did the 08 election work out?
Maybe next time post facts instead of beliefs. As my grandfather use to say You can believe a girl dog is a boy dog. But no matter how hard you believe it, and how many other people agree with you agree with you, there is no way that girl dog is going to grow a penis. The point in case you missed it is that even beliefs need to be based on facts otherwise they are pure BS.

Which led to the current gerrymandering mess we are in now.
The economic disaster under Bush gave Obama the election. Impeachment was not a big issue either way.
You have a poor reading of history in your post.

They all want to impeach the idiot. But until the case is laid out so the public knows what the hell is going on it won't happen. Public support for impeachment needs to happen too.

(4,037 posts)Is the public considered too stupid to comprehend the facts? Is Pelosi stalling as long as she can in order to do the most damage to Trump just before the election? What will happen after the election if Trump loses? Will the next president pardon him after he is convicted of countless crimes and misdemeanors? Will the idiot get away with the damage that hes done to America and our world wide reputation?
This is a mess. This election, more than any other in our history, will require all Americans to get out and vote. That means whites, blacks, & Latinos. We already have a stooge for an Attorney General, one who defies legally submitted subpoenas, and a half baked President who wouldnt know the truth even if he became educated.
We need to get the word out to vote now, while we still can - before we no longer have that right.

(51,088 posts)Until this gets ramped up more they will keep going about their busy lives.
Back during Watergate it didn't get going until Dean's testimony. And that was when there wasn't cable tv or CSPAN. The 3 networks televised the hearings. Even though we have fuller access to the news it also means that people have more choices to ignore what is happening.
The next president will not pardon DT. DT might try pardoning himself though.
The word is getting out but see paragraph 1 and 2.
Pelosi and her captains need to play their cards right. The 1973/4 hearing was when Democrats controlled both the House and Senate. They had even more control back then.

How do we Democratic voters make those indifferent Americans motivated enough to get out and vote? The so-called "white evangelicals" aren't indifferent, they vote as a block every time.

(12,344 posts)Yes many people believe both sides are corrupt. But impeachment will not convince them our side is any better. Instead it will be viewed as a political maneuver by one corrupt party against the other.
If people are to be convinced to vote, it will be for reasons other than "Trump sucks." They will convinced only by someone who authentically represents a new way of doing politics. Trump actually spoke to these people as a rules-busting nonpolitician. Among our current crop, only Buttigieg, Warren and Sanders are actively trying to court these people. All three are running against a broken system, not just Trump.
On the Constitution as a meaningless ancient document: This in fact has been true for quite some time. Many parts of it are essentially dead letters, they have no relevance or don't function as intended. Much of the rest simply doesn't address what a functioning modern democracy needs to survive. We've limped along with the Supreme Court trying to keep it together with duct tape, but that's failing now too. Yet admitting it locks us into a antiquated, dying system is considered a kind of heresy.
