WASHINGTON As they feud publicly, freshman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is slowly learning a painful lesson about American politics at the hands of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi: Power is about numbers.
Pelosi has them and Ocasio-Cortez does not.
The more Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., lashes out over the limits of her own influence, the more obvious those limits become and the more the imbalance tilts in the direction of Pelosi, D-Calif. After all, their fellow politicians are nothing if not hypersensitive to even the slightest shifts in the winds of power.
Now, they're freely dunking on Ocasio-Cortez and her allies in the wake of her not-so-veiled allegation that Pelosi is discriminating against her clique, known as "The Squad," because of their lack of seniority, their gender and their skin color.
The idea struck much of Washington as so ridiculous that the list of Pelosi's defenders included not only a legion of congressional Democrats but also Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., and President Donald Trump.
"One thing we will not tolerate," Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, D-D.C., said, "is using the race question, otherwise known as the race card, on any member especially a member who has an enviable record." If Pelosi had a problem on race, Norton added, "the whole world would know it."
Norton, 82, knows a thing or two about the obstacles young women of color face in society and politics: she attended segregated schools here, helped organize the 1963 civil rights march on Washington and served successively as the head of New York City's human rights commission and the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
Ocasio-Cortez said Friday that it is "stupidly untrue" to say she played the "race card" against Pelosi.
She is surely right about one thing: Pelosi has made an example out of The Squad Ocasio-Cortez, along with Reps. Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., Rashida Talib, D-Mich., and Ilhan Omar, D-Minn. and helped them isolate themselves from the rest of the Democratic caucus as a party of four.
The reality is that The Squads influence in American politics is more than four votes in the House but less than its members seem to think.

(17,988 posts)Do not see any response from the other 3, except for that one vote. That probably taught the other 3. AOC seems to be the only one still complaining! Am I wrong?
The worst part is that I have seen her in action in the hearings. She is good and well prepared. She now needs to learn to stay off twitter. That isnt helping Trump much either now. He is just bore some and stale.

(58,785 posts)though. Even a hostile anti-Democratic extremist wouldn't genuinely believe our house caucus is "new Southern Democrats" who "certainly seem hell bent to do to black and brown people today what the old Southern Democrats did in the 40s." That was a grenade he tossed into the house, followed by others.
Because her colleagues have been recommending she fire him? And probably others? JD's running her congressional office. If their plan is to deliberately trying to destroy her relationship with fellow Democrats and isolate her from their influence and support, they're succeeding. The caucus has now actually formally rebuked him for attacking Sharice Davids. A staff employee!
I'm thinking that if she has the makings of of a statesman, she can't be driving this. She certainly got involved with some ruthless extremists, and my theory is she's now riding the tiger. Pelosi must have a very good idea by now of just what Ocasio herself is and could, or couldn't, be, though. If she needs rescuing from the tiger, her party could probably do it.

(11,370 posts)I like that analysis. I have been trying (perhaps erroneously) to not attribute all of his statements to her. He seems deliberately offensive. I think SHE has some actual interest in doing the job. Have also been trying to allow some slack for "freshman mistakes." But all of this stuff makes for a REAL easy target for the opposition -- and a gleeful media. Now does she have the ability to learn from mistakes -- or does she double down on a toxic message?

(58,785 posts)and team probably have her very well pegged by now because it is their job after all and they're very experienced at it. Every 2 years brings them new potential assets to identify and make the most of and new problems to neutralize. From what I've seen of her, and in spite of the role she chose to play in 2016, I have real hope that Ocasio's maturing into the former and that they are able to help free her from the problem determined keep ownership.

"I have a problem with how all these young women were starting out, when they were accusing older Democrats like myself of not getting done what needed to be done in the country. And started saying, 'You haven't done this, you haven't done that.' When you start out telling people they don't know what they're doing and get out of the way, it's annoying to people. I don't think that has to do with color. I think it's more ... BS."
I hate the "why haven't Democrats stopped ____ ?" thing and the "Democrats could pass progressive legislation if they just fight hard enough." Al Franken's "Lion of the Senate" describes how government works, it's excellent. Everyone should read it.

(32,794 posts)Women and minorities her entire life. Aoc would do well to do as she and others have said... get off twitter and start listening!! She doesnt seem to realize that Speaker Pelosi has her best interest at heart -unlike that person she put in charge... running around wearing a nazi collaborator T-shirt and calling out congress woman Sherice Davids as if she were a gop collaborator
I see a crash and burn coming!!

All of those women are not old enough to remember the civil rights fight because it was 50 years ago and to still use race for every perceived slight is nonsense to those really in the fight.

It's just mind-blowing for anyone in the Dem Party to say that to Nancy.. I don't know how she thought it would help her.. because the Law of Unintended Consequences seemed to kick in rather rapidly.
I've seen people on twitter who were always praishing her work who have definitely sided with Nancy Pelosi now.

(17,988 posts)Not sure what the point is attacking Pelosi except the fact the media went after her like a dof after a bone for their couple of minutes on TV.
The same reason they breathlessly, endlessly sow Trump tweets over and over. Just the way they lied us into endless war, helped elect Trump.
Coming back from the pool I turned on Morning Joe. They were actually discussing what has happened to Evangelicals. How they have allowed anger, hate and fear to over rule anything they used to believe.
The good news is the young are not buying it. I am seeing that in my own family. Funny how the younger generation thinks like the older generation that has any sense about which party helps the middle.
Sorry for the Sermon, I do have a tendency to do that!
