BACK OFF: This mother bear gave quite a scare to a man who got too close to her cubs at Great Smoky

BACK OFF: This mother bear gave quite a scare to a man who got too close to her cubs at Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee. Signs posted in the area warn visitors to stay 50 yards away from the animals. https://abcn.ws/2jVVkiL

This guy is an idiot. Bears are not cuddly and fun like a child's stuffed animal. They are wild animals who are territorial and protective of their cubs. I'm surprised that the mama bear only made a single threatening lunge at the dummy in the video.

We have bears who live in the forest behind our mountain house. This Spring, a neighbor said the female had two cubs. That's a dangerous mix and we give the animals a wide berth. The woods are their home and we respect their space mostly because it's the safest behavior. My wife was once chased couple of hundred yards up the hill from the river by a bear.

Here's a funny, though. I was mowing the lawn and I often see deer droppings. One day, there was a large pile of poop that obviously came from a bear. This proves that the adage is wrong: Bears don't shit in the woods, they do it on my front lawn!

Several visitors lobbed insults at the man, who was nowhere to be found after the encounter, Marple said. She added that she showed the video she took to park rangers, who appeared dumbfounded by the man's behavior.

It's unclear whether officials have identified the man and whether they may pursue charges against him. A park spokeswoman did not return a request for comment on Sunday afternoon.

Park regulations ban tourists from knowingly coming within 50 yards of a bear. The federal misdemeanor charge carries a maximum sentence of six months in prison and a $5,000 fine.

I would always look for the tree I would climb if I saw a grizzly coming in my direction. None of the black spruce exceeded 25-30 feet.

Just watching about 400 pounds of Grizzly launch itself up that high tree fast and with little effort, makes me happy I never had to go up those trees and end up being nothing but low hanging fruit.

Especially when it involves animals being euthanized because of some human's stupidity. You better believe that whole bear family would have been taken out if this tourist would have gotten what he had coming.

The animals always lose.

But they won't waste the expense of a jail cell on him.

Out here in the PNW, 2 yahoos got caught red-handed poaching out of hunting season, killing animals wantonly in WA & OR.

In the national park with children running after cubs and parents taking videos.

Mind boggling.

The bears roaming and living in the Smoky Mountains are not Disney animals. Hello???

Not messing with any wildlife is a good idea, not even chipmunks.

Teaching people not to mess with poison oak is probably the most difficult task. I think some people, adults and children, are completely plant-blind. To them a plant is a plant. They may know enough not to eat a strange plant, but you can show them photographs of poison oak in all its forms, show them the actual plants, and thirty minutes later you'll find them standing in a big tangle of it trying to find the perfect spot for a selfie.

He did one of the few things you can do to provoke a black bear attack. As a rule they will avoid people whenever possible, but a momma bear WILL charge if you mess with her cubs.
