I thought it possible that the jurisdiction across the river from Vicksburg, Mississippi, would be Vicksburg, Louisiana. That does not seem to be the case.

What does look apparent is that the Mississippi River has changed course as it approached Vicksburg. What used to be the Mississippi River waterfront of most of Vicksburg is now the Yazoo River waterfront of Vicksburg. There is a thumb that sticks up from Louisiana that is on the northeast side ( "rive gauche" ) of the Mississippi River. I suspect that at one time the Mississippi River went up and over that thumb.

There's a pretty famous video of a national meteorologist saying, "and the hurricane should make landfall, umm... here... somewhere in this land mass between Louisiana and Alabama."
