It's already a given that the person who says this doesn't see us as Americans, because white Americans are allowed to complain and criticize and nobody tells them to go back to whatever European country their family originated from. Where would FoxNews be today if it was restrained from trashing everything and everybody that gets in their way?
The sad thing is, that what he says is going to resonate with his crowd BECAUSE they're racists and don't see us as equal.
Trump says that we hate this country, when it's just the opposite. It's a country that is worth fighting for to bring it in line with its Constitutional promise.
Here's the crux of the issue. We are not criticizing this country, we are criticizing the Republicans. They don't represent the best values this country is founded on.

(24,437 posts)I can't say that I haven't wanted to say this to right-wingers sometimes, especially during the Obama years because of how they much they hated Obama for largely irrational reasons, but, you're right, it's not the right thing to say to somebody.

(24,437 posts)Trumpublicans frequently govern as though they are the only ones whom matter in this country and pretty much ignore or squelch any dissent. We see this on a smaller scale in many states as well. While some people can and do move to other areas in the country, it is prohibitive in several ways for many of us to do so and, frankly, things shouldn't be so bad that somebody feels that they should *have* to move from where they are born and raised their entire lives- if they want to stay put. The problem that I see is that, in some areas, people's true needs and grievances aren't being adequately addressed and their leaders, instead of trying harder to listen, basically shut them down and make it so that they can't express themselves politically by gerrymandering and other forms of voter suppression. Local communities try to exert themselves and state governments turn around and shut them down. The ultimate point is that we all should have the ability to express ourselves politically and work to make our environments, states, communities better for ourselves and others and that "just leaving" isn't a realistic solution for most people.

People figure it out pretty quickly if they don't already know.
I used to have a relative who'd send me those wretched apocryphal stories of Jesus saving people, people who must have reminded her of me.
My final response was direct:
"Don't send me any more of these or I will mark them as spam."
My first, polite, responses were wasted effort.

(2,406 posts)First, I determine their veteran status. If they didn't serve, I tell them I'm a better American because I did. In combat. (I don't believe that, but...)
If they are a veteran, I ask them if they quit during combat. Since we are fighting for the soul of the country, why would I quit and leave? Marines don't quit...something to remember in the upcoming days.
Next, I ask them why didn't they leave during the Obama years. To hear them, Obama was the anti-christ Muslim communist Kenyan come to take their guns and Bibles.
Lastly, as has been suggested by other posters, I tell them to go fuck themselves.

(46,758 posts)The right always frames soldiers and the military as an exclusive conservative property to defend their p.o.v. and shut down dissent. But the reality is that soldiers fight for every American's freedom.
I always picture a soldier who was fighting for my right to exist as an equal. Glad you're on our side.

(7,661 posts)I had a co-worker who came into work and was loudly boasting about the election and was asking everyone individually how they liked the results.
They didn't like what I had to say and told me if I didn't like it, to leave.
My response: I'm staying right here to fight for common decency and against fascism. I will be voting in the 2018 midterms as well.
They didn't have anything to say and walked away.

BTW, my first reaction after the election was to respond to a post on Facebook. I said something like, what did you all do? You just activated the racist agenda.
None of them knew that Trump had anything to do with racism. Most thought I was worried about nothing. And here we are today.
