When you ask any of them to explain "socialism" or "communism" they always give some stupid answer having to do with Stalin and totalitarianism which is not what communism is either.

All they know is that "communism is bad" has been in the lexicon of American right wingers since the 1930's so people are going to have a visceral reaction.

A significant percentage of US citizens believe every stinking lie that comes from Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Fox "News" and every other filthy fascist propaganda outlet. These people would wage war and murder their fellow Americans thanks to decades of right-wing propaganda. Not only from the Nazi liars previously mentioned, but also the much more subtle but equally dangerous corporate mass media (CBS, NBC, ABC etc.) who put a thin veneer of objectivity on their right-wing lies and bias.
