House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Monday urged support for an upcoming resolution that would condemn tweets by President Trump in which he said that a group of minority, liberal congresswomen should go back to their home countries.
In a letter to Democratic colleagues, Pelosi said that Trump had gone beyond his own low standards using disgraceful language about Members of Congress and that Democrats would forcefully respond to these disgusting acts.
Her announcement of the resolution came as Trump doubled down on his criticism of the female lawmakers, accusing them of racist hatred and suggesting they apologize to the United States, Israel and him.
A vote rebuking Trump for targeting the so-called Squad a group of liberal freshmen that includes Reps. Ayanna Pressley (Mass.), Rashida Tlaib (Mich.), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (N.Y.) and Ilhan Omar (Minn.) could unify a Democratic caucus that has been engaged an outright civil war in recent days.
And a House vote condemning Trump would also put Republicans on record about comments that have been widely criticized as racist. Congressional Republicans have largely stayed silent on the matter, fearful of chastising a leader in the White House who is popular with the GOP base.
