"SNIP......
Excessive-heat watches are already in effect for all of Missouri as well as portions of Kansas, Illinois and Iowa, as heat indexes are forecast to range from 100 degrees to 110 degrees from Wednesday through Saturday.
The prolonged duration of the heat and humidity will potentially become dangerous to those most vulnerable, according to the National Weather Service. Heat kills more people per year in the United States than any other weather hazard, and typically the elderly, young children and those without air conditioning are most susceptible to heat-related illnesses.
Chicago is predicted to see its hottest temperatures Friday, whereas the hottest days for areas further east may come Saturday and Sunday.
In Philadelphia, the Weather Service says it has high confidence in heat index values over 105 degrees Friday through Sunday and has issued an excessive-heat watch due to the rare prolonged stretch of heat. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a DANGEROUS SITUATION in which heat illnesses are possible, it cautioned.

(16,826 posts)Stay fed and hydrated, water preferred.
Avoid Alcohol in excessive amounts.
That goes for sugary drinks as well.
Keep wet washcloths handy.
Avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day.
Keep curtains drawn if possible to blot out the sun.
If you have to be outside, wear light clothing, a hat, umbrella to keep the sun off you, water handy.
Most of all, keep pets inside. Make sure children are not left in cars.

(34,135 posts)There are several types. The easiest is a styrofoam cooler and a bunch of ice. You cut two holes in the top. One to fit a battery powered fan and the other to fit a PVC pipe with an elbow. The fan blows on the ice and it escapes from the pipe and provide cool air. I saw one made with a bucket with holes along the top, an aquarium pump and tubing with a battery powered fan. You lined the bucket with some kind of material (I forgot) and put holes in the tubing....shoot I should just send the link! Duh!

(34,135 posts)Lets see if I can get around to this and how it actually works. I have bottles of ice to put in the goat shed tomorrow and I can blow the fan over the big ones and hopefully help until I can do this. I think the one in the video seems the best one unless one has unlimited freezer space for ice.

(118,847 posts)wasn't even 90 degrees. Hope the critters are okay.

(34,135 posts)I work hard to keep them OK but sometimes it is just too much. Lots of fans. Sadly all my critters are old. I have lost 2 cats and a horse in the last 7 months with another very sick cat. More to come. At least I do not have to put up my own hay. I grow it and split the harvest and someone else puts it up for me. After years of having to do that I am now done with all but a few bales here and there.
Be safe yourself. It is going to be one really nasty summer all over I think.

MuseRider
(34,135 posts)but I had no idea you did not usually get thunder and lightening in May, June and July usually and only in August. It makes sense I suppose but I never thought of that.
Stay cool!

(118,847 posts)loved storms and was a country girl. She would open doors whenever there was a storm during the day so she could see and hear everything. Now i don't mind them as long as i am not in them.

(999 posts)Greenhouse seasonal. No matter what the plants need water. It gets really, REALLY ugly in my normally very happy place. Move slowly, water feet frequently. Don't laugh - it is amazing how good it feels to give hot feet a cooling shot of water.
I worry about the guys doing curb and gutter work in my neighborhood. Worry about my farming family members as they care for their livestock. Worry about my beloved zoo critters and their keepers. Good news there, the keepers have action plans to make sure the animals stay safe and cool as possible. It is going to be a challenging few days for everyone.
Zeus Dog gets his morning walk at 5 AM - still beautiful that time of day. Sidewalks and pavements have cooled overnight so his paws are comfy. There is an area where he can run and frolic and be a dog. Evening walk - depends on the state of those hard surfaces. We humans wear shoes and don't always realize how hot the sidewalks, streets, and even the house deck surface can get. He is currently stretched out on the cool tile floor, gently snoring - a walk, breakfast, the last bite of Mom's bacon - life is good for the ol' boy.
