Trump, asked why he didn't stop the "send her back" chants, claims he did

Maggie Haberman
@maggieNYT

Via pool, Trump asked why he didn’t stop the “send her back” chants, claims he did, even though they continued and he let it breathe: “I think I did - I started speaking very quickly.”

Regardless of whether Trump tried to stop the chanting, no matter how weak or ineffectual, is Trump conceding that the chant was racist, antiamerican, and wrong?

when it is convenient for him to do so. Just like he always does, like the coward he is. And, the liar he is. He didn't do anything to dissuade them. He just lied about it.

Its the same kind of behavior as what he did with his Helsinki performance when he was too cowardly to say Putin interfered with the election standing next to Putin, and then claimed he "mis-spoke" the next day.

The crowd was chanting, but not really getting into it. Trump did indeed resume speaking, quickly, but only to rev up the crowd some more with incendiary statements against Rep. Omar. The chanting got going in earnest then, and Trump just stood at the podium for several seconds letting the hysteria build.

The blonde girl behind him wearing the magat hat, when the chant first started to break out - you could see her trying to decide if she should join in, maybe because it did not feel right, slowly mouthing the chant, then picking up her pace along with the "in crowd". Meantime, there were a bunch of feckless magat cowards standing behind him we could see who would not join the chant, instead just looking around nervously like THEY would be seen, afraid of being seen on TV mouthing what they knew very well was going to be seen over and over - them participating in an un-American nazi like chant. What they don't understand is whether they are seen mouthing it or not they are all seen standing there beside the bigot leading the crowd into a frenzy. And more importantly, by not joining the chant, they were acknowledging that they know it is wrong, that he is wrong, and unfit and leading an un-American movement they themselves are party to. And now they have no excuse. We know exactly who they are.

I think a lot of truth unfolded in that moment last night.

before he actually uses them in public. I’d be willing to be the chant was his idea and a few of his campaign workers got it going.
