Accusing Obama of doubling the debt. And even said that some of Obama's debt flowed into his own term. No one was there to question him.
Anyone care to break this down for us? I am just wondering how long it will take for the fact checkers to weigh in on the media.

He's twisting the facts. And someone needs to call him out because this is where he's the most vulnerable.

(8,930 posts)Seems likes every time I am watching if he is questioned he just lies his way through it and not held accountable for the lie. I didn't see this particular exchange but I will make a blind wager if he was talking about Obama "doubling the debt" that there was no one presenting facts on spending during Obama administration vs his.

(11,443 posts)prior to him taking office. Just look at the GW Bush policies that added trillions to the debt during Obama's term...
War in Iraq started by GW Bush
War in Afghanistan started by GW Bush
Homeland Security Act by GW Bush
Medicare Drug Bill by GW Bush
Bailing out the banks by GW Bush
Massive tax breaks that cut revenue and added to the debt by GW Bush
Massive economic disaster caused by GW Bush that required Obama's stimulus policies to prevent a depression
All of these republican approved policies added trillions to our debt during Obama's term.

(58,721 posts)Most economists said that the stimulus package should have been twice as big as it was, and it was the Repubs who basically forced us to maintain the Bush taxcuts for several years after they should have been rescinded.
gratuitous
(82,849 posts)I'll bet not, because the reason for that was his massive tax cuts for his overrich buddies. The Republican solution, as always, is to cut spending (particularly on the poors) instead of raising taxes on the wealthy. Isn't it odd how that works out? After blowing a hole in the budget last year, Sen. Paul was suddenly concerned this week about the fiscal impact of funding relief for first responders to the 9/11 attacks. A billion dollars a year for 10 full years! Mercy! How are we going to pay for that? What? Trump wants to start another war, this time in Iran? No problem! Plenty of give in the budget to afford that.

(4,490 posts)In the most common manner of calculating debt increase (simple subtraction), under Obama the debt went from $10.6 Trillion to $19.9 Trillion. And Trump is also correct that he inherited some debt from President Obama.
The comparison isn't a fair one though in that Bush should get credited with the deficit from Obama's first year, like Trump is crediting Obama for his early defecit. The first year of a President's term, they're operating under the previous year's budget.
The common way we talk about the debt and defecit is over simplified though relative to what's actually happening.
A basic explation can be seen here:
