How many Nazis are there in this country really?

How could we even find out? Is it fair to say if they vote for this asshole they are at least partway there?

Don’t these people have grandfathers?

Maybe 1 million Grandpa intervention would help.

there are some republicans who will finally realize they've gone too far when they see the square mustache.

actually, there are *a lot* of republicans who are in it for the money and really don't care for the divisive racism crap (not enough to object to it, though). they roll their eyes and put up with it because hey, if that's what it takes to get my tax cut and deregulation for my company, whatever.

but the square mustache would scare them. they still want normalcy, they don't actually want a dictatorship or civil war or protests in the street or strikes. there *is* a point at which donnie could lose them.

you're right that *the republican party* wouldn't abandon him, but he'd go down to 25-30% support instead of 40% support and at that point it becomes difficult for them to steal elections and get away with it.

56,000 people voted for an open and admitted Nazi. The local GOP politicians even spoke to their members and asked them not to vote for the Nazi, but 56,000 voted for him in spite of that.

So, based on that, my guess is that this 56,000 represents the stupid, and the Nazi sympathizers. As to the proportion of each, I am open to argument.

The GOP doesn't even normally try to run in that district. I remember the GOP trying to shut the nazi down. It's solidly Bluedog Democrat country.

The Southwest side of Chicago, where this district is, is historically racist as F. Things only got better there with an influx of Hispanic residents over the past several years.

This is why I think the USA could have a widespread insurgency waiting in the wings. This quarter of the population has been energized and normalized by Trump, and they don't mind if people different from them die. Now, if a charismatic revolutionary leader were to come along and take advantage of those feelings, all bets are off. With a bit more organization, you're looking at The Final American Solution, applied to liberals, Democrats, POC and eggheads.

...we have had neo-Nazis/white nationalists in the US, and I am now 71. We have also had groups tracking them, and they produce maps of where extremists have active groups. I know there are some sprinkled throughout California -- hell, I know there are some in the mellow laid back Central Coast where I live, not because I've seen white-sheet & tiki torch parades on Main Street, but because in the past I have taken a good look at those maps.

The only difference between 30 years ago and today is that for awhile they were socially unacceptable and truly a fringe element -- and now we have a full-on racist as president who holds
white nationalist rallies, and the GOP has fully embraced the people who hold this dangerous ideology.

" Michael Von Kotch, a Pennsylvania resident who called himself a Nazi, said the rally made him "proud to be white."

He said that he's long held white supremacist views and that Trump's election has "emboldened" him and the members of his own Nazi group. "

So of the virulent sort we could call "nazi" I would bet about a quarter of the population - around 80 million or so.

One of the best studies on authoritarian personalities was done by Bob Altemeyer at the University of Manitoba. A web site devoted to the topic is here: https://www.theauthoritarians.org/

Although there are several tests for authoritarian/fascist tendencies, here is a very simple but apparently accurate one, based on parenting style:

A strange but accurate predictor of whether someone supports Donald Trump

Matthew MacWilliams, a doctoral candidate at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, conducted a poll in which Republicans were asked four questions about child-rearing. With each question, respondents were asked which of two traits were more important in children:

> independence or respect for their elders;
> curiosity or good manners;
> self-reliance or obedience;
> being considerate or being well-behaved.

Psychologists use these questions to identify people who are disposed to favor hierarchy, loyalty and strong leadership — those who picked the second trait in each set — what experts call "authoritarianism." That many of Trump's supporters share this trait helps explain the success of his unconventional candidacy and suggests that his rivals will have a hard time winning over his adherents.

Title: The One Weird Trait That Predicts Whether You’re a Trump Supporter
And it’s not gender, age, income, race or religion.

If I asked you what most defines Donald Trump supporters, what would you say? They’re white? They’re poor? They’re uneducated?

You’d be wrong.

In fact, I’ve found a single statistically significant variable predicts whether a voter supports Trump—and it’s not race, income or education levels: It’s authoritarianism.

These two fictional characters from "No Country for Old Men" would be Trump voters because they're so disturbed by others not following the "rules" of their cultural norms.
