Katie Porter isn't part of 'The Squad.' But the freshman House Dem is stirrng up trouble for Trump

Porter, 45, isn't part of "The Squad" -- the four-woman group of freshman progressives of color who were attacked this week by President Donald Trump. But she's emerged as a viral star when it comes to how banks and the government treat the working poor and puncturing Trump's claims about the economy.

She's carving out a Warren-esque role for herself that's included asking top officials do basic math under oath. Her targets so far have included major Wall Street players like JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, Equifax CEO Mark Begor and now-former Wells Fargo CEO Tim Sloan.

..................................................

Whether or not the professor-turned-congresswoman can turn her unique way of questioning government officials and Wall Street executives into making real legislative change remains to be seen. A bicameral bill she brought forth with Democratic Sens. Warren, Sherrod Brown of Ohio, and Tom Udall of New Mexico would bolster the power of the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau so that it could oversee student loan servicers. Porter has also introduced legislation with Harris that would strengthen the power of state attorneys general to monitor banks.

So far none of these bills have major support from Republicans. But a bill she introduced that would raise the civil penalties assessed to security law violators was marked up by committee last week and a similar Senate bill is cosponsored by Iowa Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley. Two of her other bills -- one on mental health and the other addressing homecare for seniors -- have some support from across the aisle.

Squad 2? Whatever, this is awesome. Women are doing their thing. The Democratic men are doing their thing too but this is just awesome to me. I wonder what I could have done if I had known it could have been done. Grew up groomed to be a wife and mommy. I loved being a mommy but I never knew I could do it all.

Go women! Go all! Form up, speak out and move this country into a kind and happily live-able nation for all people.

I remember sitting in my sixth-grade classroom (1962) when I learned the reason why women could never be president. I don't recall how my male teacher phrased it, but he conveyed that women were too 'moody' because we have periods.

I was around the same age when told I could not join the volunteer fire department when I got older. But I could become part of the Ladies' Auxiliary and bring refreshments to the fireMEN.

I was angry and rebellious and became a part of the changes to begin later that decade. It took so many baby steps to get where we are today and I am so proud of all of these women and especially the women of color, who have claimed their places and are fearlessly using their voices for further change.

They'd be a lot more effective and would not be as open to attack. Katie backs up her position with cold hard facts that cannot be easily attacked. AOC on the other hand is long on pie in the sky ideas but very short on actual facts. Advantage: Katie Porter. Hands Down.

No clothes for the growing child. No necessities like cleaning and laundry supplies.

No car insurance. No dentist.

No birthday presents. No Christmas presents.

The only way a single parent with a child could make that kind of income work would be to have a paying roommate to offset the housing cost, or to share a residence with someone.

It's pretty sad.

I'm looking forward to living by myself for the first time ever. Right now my son and his family are staying with me while they're building a house. They'll be moving out within the next couple of months. I considered getting a roommate or two, but I'm going to try to swing it on my own first.

My housing cost is substantially lower than Patricia's, thankfully. I noticed that she's driving a 2008 car, which means that she's a car repair away from complete ruin.

That's the thing with a lot of people these days. If one single thing happens, one major repair or other expense, they're ruined.

But, hey, according to 45, every is doing great.

Minimum wage should be closer to $30/hr in 2019.

Fight for $30, not slow path to $15!

This is just another ploy, $15 will show up and watch costs.

Porter's one of 95 members of our Congressional Progressive Caucus and a strong progressive, but of course not a "squad" type.

538 and some other analysts are using the term "superprogressives" to differentiate the minority who represent the farther left, especially ones allied with anti-Democratic Party dissident groups, as all four members of the squad are, from the far, far larger population of progressive Democrats.

The big differences between the large majority of progressives and the superprogressives are usually less in policy goals than in attitude of the latter toward their Democratic colleagues, seeing them, as Bernie Sanders put it, too much like Tweedledum to the Republican Tweedledee. Also, before they'd ally and compromise with progressive Democrats to achieve their shared goals, superprog groups have at times been willing to not only fail to achieve all goals but even let the Republicans take power and destroy existing progressive government.

We're hoping the squad won't ever go that far, but some dissent is necessary since too much cooperation risks eliminating the whole reason for a dissident group's existence. And with it the small but very real power that national attention creates. Even though Nancy's correct that they only have 4 votes against 231 other Democrats, Ocasio especially is raising a great deal of money that makes her someone who can't be dismissed.

We saw the squad playing to their public when they recently took a stand against the majority by refusing to vote for funding to care for already badly neglected children imprisoned in Republican detention camps. This was even though existing funding was about to run out. All the majority progressives, including Porter, felt they could ethically meet the emergency needs of the children and also take a stand against kidnapping and abusing them, but the superprogs needed to publicly disagree.

In any case, the significant differences in basic orientation and political positioning show why Katie Porter could not be one of the squad. She and the rest will do her level best to work with them to achieve common goals, however.
