The Soviets sent Valentina Tereshkova to space in 1963, but then went years before they sent another.

Facts is facts. At the time, there were no female astronauts IIRC. There were, however women working on the project, some in key positions.

Related to this is that great movie about the black female mathematicians that developed the first orbit of the earth. I had no idea this was the case...where the hell have I been, for sure...

The movie is Hidden Figures. And they sure were...

Yes, they beat us to the "FIRST", which motivated our race to the moon, but I don't see where that is a statement on our obvious systematic sexism. Seems beside the point to me.

Gagarin made it to space in 1961. That they followed up with a WOMAN two years later is very momentous IMO and shames our own history.

Among reasons put forth around country for why women could not be astronauts: they were too emotional, they menstruated, they should not be in close quarters with men........

Few women could have qualified because they were not able to get into the roles that served as prerequisites-such as military test pilots.

Magazines did features on the "wives" of astronauts-usually zeroing in on the supportive spouse and mother role.

I remember how the TV series MASH developed the character of Margaret Houlihan. She started out as "Hot Lips Houlihan" and it was several iterations of that show until she was "Major Houlihan." The "good" male characters were dominant but were horribly sexist in their behavior toward the nurses. By the end of the show, Margaret had finally gotten her deserved place in the telling of that story.

Astronaut Peggy Whitson Retiring: Six NASA Records She Broke

Six records Peggy Whitson broke:

Whitson holds the record for most days in space by a NASA astronaut, and is ranked eighth in the world for most time spent by an astronaut in space.

Whitson was the first female to lead the Astronaut Office as chief, and the first to lead it without being in the military.

On her first trip to the ISS, Whitson made history as the first NASA science officer on the station.

Whitson was the first female commander of the ISS.

She was also the first woman to command the ISS twice.

Whitson holds the record for the most space walks done outside of the ISS by a female NASA astronaut: She did 10 space walks during her multiple trips to the ISS.
