Being a responsible citizen should not be a full time job.

We have never had a government before that encouraged us to live in fear of it. We have always had the (naive?) comforting expectation that, whoever was in the White House, they would try----most of the time--- to operate within the boundaries that took a couple of centuries to establish. And, when the POTUS failed or refused to color within the lines imprinted by our democracy, we could depend on Congress and the Judiciary to hold him in line.

I expect next to nothing in the way of "checking and balancing" from Congress as long as Mitch and the GOP maintain their stranglehold on the Senate.

With one SCOTUS seat stolen and another secured by perjury and intimidation and dozens of lower federal court benches filled by appointees whose primary "qualification" was sycophancy, I no longer feel that "no man is above the law".

I have one vote and I cast it in every election, but I no longer feel that I have any real "say" in what my country does in my name. I am more informed than 99% of my neighbors here in Little Egypt, but so what? In this area, that knowledge gets me shunned---or worse. And, I feel like WE have to watch every move Trump makes because no one in power is.

It is tempting on some days go say "the HELL with it!"---just roll a fattie, sit in the shade and float away on some Dobie Gray. But, I have children and grandchildren and---dammit!---I still care!

So, move over. Make room for a gray-haired arthritic who is determined to somehow help bring his nightmare to an end.

Thank you for your patience with this mini-rant.

I'm probably the most politically tuned in my place of employment...
mostly 20 somethings, another 1/2 dozen or so older adults, many are upset with what is happening and I've been the go to guy for updates, sharing info, outrage and also the cartoons for the laughs at the Orange menace... but I've also expressed many times, and it's confusing to some to hear me say it, but I should NOT have to be this attuned to what is gong on in our gov't !!
we all have lives to lead, happiness to seek, jobs to do, and to have to learn daily of the outrageous crimes of this administration is wearing physically, mentally and spiritually... I truly believe my health has suffered by the onslaught of the last 2 years...
now I have grandkids (twins, 1 of each born 10 days ago, and 1 3yr old grandson) that want to enjoy, and know they will have a good and happy life, but I'm afraid I will have to take to the trenches before all is said and done ... I just signed up for SocSec (still working P/t) because I don't know how long that will be available in the future...
awaken everyday with words of Roy Batty running through my head ... Quite an experience to live in fear, isn’t it? That’s what it is to be a slave.

ymmv,

power is ever stealing from the many to the few. The manna of popular liberty must be gathered each day or it is rotten. The living sap of today outgrows the dead rind of yesterday. The hand entrusted with power becomes, either from human depravity or esprit de corps, the necessary enemy of the people. Only by continued oversight can the democrat in office be prevented from hardening into a despot; only by unintermitted agitation can a people be sufficiently awake to principle not to let liberty be smothered in material prosperity.”

American Abolitionist and liberal activist Wendell Phillips on January 28, 1852.
