(26,758 posts)She does, however, disappoint many here by shooting down ideas re: packing the court.
That impairs the idea of an independent judiciary, she said.

(90,793 posts)Refusing Gorsuch even the courtesy of an audience was simply one last resounding FU to President Obama.
The fact that Obama achieved as much as he did was absolutely no thanks to the GOP, but also know this: the be-all and end-all for Republicans/Conservatives is control of the SCOTUS and of the lifetime-appointment lower federal courts that are a feeder system to the SCOTUS. As a matter of right-wing strategy they blocked dozens and dozens of federal judgeships from ever being filled during Obama's tenure.
If you think Obama would ever have been allowed to pack the high court because of another resignation or death, well I'd like to have some of what you're smoking.

(26,758 posts)He absolutely could have replaced her.
He was blocked in every conceivable way
Except, of course, for the two SCOTUS appointments that he got through.

(90,793 posts)That was after Republicans took over the senate.
She could have retired when we controlled
Hekate
(90,793 posts)...federal judgeships, right?
You know all that?
FBaggins
(26,758 posts)It doesn't matter what they "swore". They were unable to "sabotage him" on judges while we controlled the Senate. She could have retired during the six years when we knew that Obama was able to replace her without sabotage (as evidence by the fact that he replaced two others).

(22,600 posts)She doesn't know that, nobody does.
There are thousands of people who were alive this morning who all expected to see tomorrow but never will.
We are all alive until we are not, and when you become a senior citizen like I am, you become keenly aware that the end of the road is in sight, that more sand has left the glass than remains.
It's good to keep living your life, but it's also good to have a grasp on your mortality.
If the next president is a Democrat, Ginsburg should strongly consider hanging it up because there would be no shame in that.
