Such a deficit is a stigmatizing deficit, especially to the elderly, but may be easily correctable to those who are financially capable and psychologically accepting of correcting that deficit that inhibits comprehension; other pathologies are progressive and cannot be improved. Many are far more stigmatizing. Could he be newly (within the past two years) physiologically and functionally mentally unwell?
