(51,627 posts)They weren't too positive in general but MSNBC was negative in their review.
I missed the first testimony but got to see the reaction between testimonies on both channels. As an objective observer I would say that the GOP is sounding like they won by Mueller not saying anything new. This is how the MSM is playing it. I thought that is what we expected but the two stations aren't saying this. The average American who hasn't been keeping up would assume the GOP came out ahead after the first testimony if they base their conclusion on the news anchors' statements.

(14,971 posts)It can't be stated enough that Trump wasn't exonerated and was ok with Russian interference. The media should be focused on the crazy conspiracy theories the Republicans kept bringing up that they got off of Sean Hannity.

(14,565 posts)That he started off the morning slow and reluctant, with brief answers and some lack of memory. But then he rebounded in the second stage and was considerably sharper and more effective, using more detailed responses.
The header on CNN was, "Mueller: Trump was not exonerated." Panel members emphasized that theme while pointing out that there were plenty of sound bites that the GOP could use -- and were already using -- to make Mueller look weak and confused.
Jeffrey Toobin said that bottom line the American public can't set aside three and a half hours to watch full testimony, so unfortunately the major sound bites and the spin becomes their reality.

I'm just glad the world swimming championships are still ongoing. There may be some surprises there. With this type of event I know exactly what to expect. I posted months ago that Mueller would be robotic and cautious and not provide anything particularly damning. He is far too dignified to emphasize his opinions first, as opposed to what he views as his responsibilities as held by the process and described within the report.
We need Donald Trump to defeat himself. As long as he keep talking for the next 15 months it might be enough for the occasional high profile atrocity, allowing public outrage to knock his approval rating down a vital point or so. Currently 42.7% in the 538 compilation. In particular we need the Hispanic community to sour on Trump. Otherwise that demographic has a long standing history of late devotion to the incumbent, far beyond issue logic.
None of the external factors like Robert Mueller were ever going to be enough to make a Trump defeat a cinch. I'm glad I have 35 years invested as handicapper, so I can understand that type of thing. Always ignore today. The belief in Mueller is centering on one day. Never wise. Today drifts into tomorrow and nothing has changed. Handicappers grasp that type of big picture reality while the folks who obsess over every detail and every development somehow allow themselves to project one Perry Mason moment after another.
