I'm posting this in Primaries because of *mentioning* Primaries, although I think it's a general topic.
In this Democratic debate as in the previous round, it was clear that almost all of the 20 participants were intelligent, well intentioned for the good of the country, civil, conscientious about public service, etc.
And, the contrast between them and the previous Repuke primary of 16 was clear, the Repukes being (as they always are) clowns, freaks, scoundrels to greater or lesser degree, jerks, and greedy s.o.b.(s). About the only one of the bunch who approximated normality was KASICH, one out of 17, but as always, if somebody is a Repuke there's something wrong with them.
The difference in the parties is a difference of world view: Libs look inward to find root causes; wingnuts look outward for who to demonize and blame. Libs practice the inner meanings of values (think, burning the flag as free speech/dissent); wingnuts claim to worship the material embodiment of things (think, the material/fiber of the flag). Again interior vs exterior. Libs, the common good; wingnuts, narrow self-interest. And on and on.
When I was young I thought in terms of personalities, heroes, as in a cult: Woodrow WILSON, FDR (obviously), HST, Andy JACKSON, LBJ. Almost all of them have been subjected to cutting down, SOMEWHAT, to size. But I still almost worship them, especially FDR (obviously). When all the dirty laundry started with the KENNEDYs, (who were never my heroes anyway), I fairly much gave up with the hero stuff. I never idolized the CLINTONs or even OBAMA (who seems to be personally DECENT). I have respected all of the previous Dem nominees, going wild.
The current crop are good as usual. Almost any one of them except for the 4 or 5 outliers will do well enough if they win. Despite the supposed Progressive vs Moderate divide, theres not much difference. Whoever wins will be good enough. The issues are irrelevant, will sort themselves out once TWITLER is gone. TWITLER being gone is the trump card, damn the issues in the meantime.
*** I posted this in Primaries to be safe. If it got moved, fine. Hope I'm not incurring judgment here.

(1,306 posts)I've worked in local gov't for 25 years or so. In that time I have had to work with members of all parties, dem, rep, even green and lib.
There's one MAJOR difference between dems and reps. The first question Republicans always ask is "how will this help me?" While the first question Democrats always ask is "how will this help the community"
