It used to be that in a President we wanted a person who is

honest, has integrity, cares about the working class, fights corruption, actually puts in the work necessary to do the job well, seeks compromise with his/her political opponents, is a decent role model, is wise when dealing with foreign governments, and, generally speaking, competent.

What the fuck happened? 40% of the people in this country approve of a guy who is a pathological liar, corrupt, a narcissist, lazy, a racist, the puppet of our foreign adversaries, incompetent, stupid, and downright evil.

Again, what the fuck happened?

If lying is protected speech, we can expect this to get worse.

Both of whom actively worked with foreign governments to subvert elections as well. Nixon telling the Vietnamese to pull out of the Peace process in 1968 for a "better deal" under his administration, prolonging the war another 5 years killing how many more thousands of US soldiers and Vietnamese people. Or Reagan who brokered a deal to sell Iran weapons illegally in exchange for holding the US hostages longer to make Carter look bad during the election of 1980, then using the proceeds from the illegal weapons sale to illegally fund the right wing death squads of the Contras?

Those role models who won their elections in pretty much landslides?

There has ALWAYS been close to half of the country who doesn't care that their candidate pisses on the law and constitution as long as their social and economic power is preserved. That percentage is probably decreasing, but still large enough for them to win with some legal and illegal cheating.

Some falsely deny that Trump is a republican

Selected as a republican at the republican convention.
Ran as a republican.
Elected as a republican by the EC.
Acknowledged as the republican leader.

Certainly not an old style republican with morals, honor, ethics and integrity.
Those folks are gone.

But he's a republican.
