Rep. Mike Turner said Tuesday he backs a ban on sales of military-style guns, magazine limits and "red flag" legislation to identify dangerous individuals and remove their firearms.
Turner has an "A" rating from the National Rifle Association and last year earned the organization's support for opposing a ban on semi-automatic firearms, commonly called "assault weapons."
"I strongly support the Second Amendment, but we must prevent mentally unstable people from terrorizing our communities with military style weapons," Turner said in a statement Tuesday afternoon.
Around 1 a.m. Sunday, a shooter fired at least 41 rounds in 30 seconds before police took him down entering Ned Peppers Bar in the city's Oregon District. Nine people were killed and 27 were injured. The shooter, wearing body armor, used a modified AR-15 style .223 caliber firearm and legal, 100-round magazines.

Buried halfway into the article is this tidbit that explains his change of heart:
Turner's daughter and a family friend were at a bar across the street when the shooting unfolded.

He didn't have enough empathy for the parents of those slaughtered children of Sandy Hook back in 2012, or for the families of the 59 killed by the Las Vegas shooter to support gun control legislation. I could name countless other mass shootings that failed to elicit enough empathy, enough DECENCY from Congressman Turner.
It is only when yet another mass shooting strikes a little too close to home that he is able to defy the NRA.
And THAT speaks volumes about the cowardice of the Republican party,

Amazing what happens when it gets personal especially for those without empathy.

yes, that is what many (especially Republicans) lack... I have maintained that our problems are created by lack of empathy and critical thinking skills

When it affects them personally.
Like Rob Portman who was an opponent of gay marriage until his son came out as gay.
