Months ago there were many stories floating around that the NRA was funneling millions of dollars from Russia to help get Trump elected. I remember at the time, thinking this is huge and that it could be the end of the NRA. The original reporting indicated that it was a focus of Mueller's investigations.
But there has been little or nothing in the headlines since then. It was not a topic of discussion in the Mueller testimony at Congress, as I remember.
What happened? Supposedly the FBI, Mueller, and Congress were all investigating this, and if it's true it would have big implications. Yet it seems to have fallen off the radar. In fact I just scan/searched the entire text of Mueller's congressional testimony and the word NRA does not appear even once!!! What the?

The F.B.I. and special counsel Robert Mueller are investigating meetings between N.R.A. officials and powerful Russian operatives, trying to determine if those contacts had anything to do with the gun group spending $30 million to help elect Donald Trumptriple what it invested on behalf of Mitt Romney in 2012. The use of foreign money in American political campaigns is illegal. One encounter of particular interest to investigators is between Donald Trump Jr. and a Russian banker at an N.R.A. dinner.

The National Rifle Association reported this week that it received more money from people with Russian ties than it has previously acknowledged, but announced that it was officially done cooperating with a congressional inquiry exploring whether illicit Kremlin-linked funding passed through the NRA and into Donald Trumps 2016 presidential campaign, Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) said on Wednesday.

Maria Butina deserved jail, sure, but it will not be good if the Russian oligarch who sent her and the NRA leaders who used her get off scot-free.

A few other investigations bear mentioning. An inquiry by the House Intelligence Committee and the FBIs reported investigation of Alexander Torshin both probed the gun groups ties to Russia, although there is no hard evidence that the NRA or its employees have been pulled into either of those probes. Watchdog organizations have filed a series of complaints with the Federal Election Commission regarding the NRAs campaign finance activities, and two groups are now suing the regulator for its failure to act on those complaints.
