Is Trump hoping that his threatened new tax on French wine might benefit his sons poorly-reviewed Trump Winery in the vineyards of Virginia?
No one inside the lush halls of the Miraval winery, co-owned by Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt with a French partner and located in Provence, wanted to answer that question this week. But the French receptionist who picked up the phone kept laughing. Cest amusant, she said.
What was so funny? The international catfightcall it the wine warsbetween President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron thats erupted over a new 3% tax to be levied on the revenues earned by big U.S. digital companies in France.
Trump was furious by Frances so-called GAFA high-tech tax and retaliated by threatening to impose tariffs on French wine, which he called inferior to the American brand.
Trump was furiousor at least he pretended to beby the so-called GAFA (stands for Google, Amazon, Facebook and Apple) tax and retaliated by threatening to impose tariffs on French wine which he called inferior to the American brand.

Some suggested that Eric Trumps vineyards in Charlottesville could benefit if the president slaps a tax on French wine. However, Trump Winery was savaged in a Vanity Fair review that described the wine taste as Welchs grape jelly with alcohol.

(34,661 posts)It is the Law of France. How many Centuries has this been the rule? Watched the Ground Crews unloading Pallets of this stuff from NWA Air Freighters at the Humphrey Air Freight Terminal years ago and loading it into the local Beer and Wine Wholesaler's Trucks to be delivered by opening the next morning. One Wine and Liquor Store even had Midnight Special sale with tons of people waiting to buy one of the first bottles in the US.

(25,183 posts)but the US West Coast has got them beat, especially in the red varietals. I've been past the Trump winery in Virginia, it's on the way to Blenheim Vineyards, owned by Dave Matthews (yes, that Dave Matthews). They make some good wines at Blenheim, again, especially the whites.
Not sure why Eric Trump is having trouble with the same soils, microclimate, etc.

(17,340 posts)they will never be able to compete in terms of value.
The operations are too small, and the tax structure in the US doesn't encourage small growers.
