For those on DU who believe in the magical power of suicide prevention measures... from a US Marshals suicide training presentation:

All one can really say is that suicide prevention is not and likely can never be 100% effective.
That said, there is nothing about this data that either explains nor excuses what is already coming to light in terms of the MCC staff negligence.

(62,444 posts)Because 93% of prison suicides are hanging, with 30% tied to the bed or bunk.
These statistics are literally one mouse click away from you.

(38,321 posts)From my own locked psych ward experience I couldn't even catch a few moments peace sitting on the toilet.
There were cameras everywhere, and also an alarm on the bed that alerted staff the instant I got up.
Of course there were meds too, which I'm guessing they don't do so much in prison. If you can't sleep they give you a pill, and you do sleep.
I very soon discovered in order not to be disturbed my best bet was to be reading a book in full view of the nursing station.

(62,444 posts)The presumption of innocence establishes the procedural burden of proof in a legal proceeding. It does not generally require anyone else to consider anybody to be innocent of anything.
Its the prosecutors JOB to convince people the defendant is guilty. They dont do that by presuming anybody to be innocent as if it was some sort of universal personal directive.
And, duh, this nation has been in a long continuous process of attempting to become what it claims to be. What the fuck do you expect from starting out with a slaveowner going on about equality? Progress is a journey, not a destination.

(38,321 posts)... we, as a society, ought to demand a certain standard of care.
People dying in prison, killed by others or dying by other preventable causes, is just another form of capital punishment.
Meanwhile in Norway, Anders Behring Breivik still lives.

There's a lot of LIHOP shit in U.S.A. prisons. Beatings, rapes, and murders are not uncommon.
In a better world jail serves as a "time out" and prison serves to remove dangerous people from ordinary society.
"Punishment" and death should not be part of that equation.
