"Serious discussions are taking place between House and Senate leadership on meaningful Background Checks. I have also been speaking to the NRA, and others, so that their very strong views can be fully represented and respected," Trump tweeted. "Guns should not be placed in the hands of mentally ill or deranged people.

Steve Scalise: Dont blame Trump for mass shootings
By KELSEY TAMBORRINO 08/11/2019 01:14 PM EDT Updated 08/11/2019 07:51 PM EDT
House Minority Whip Steve Scalise on Sunday called it a very slippery slope to blame President Donald Trumps rhetoric for deadly mass shootings in recent weeks.
He is creating the kind of divisiveness in this nation that is the last thing that we should be doing, Sanders said. So, he creates the climate. But do I think that he wants to see somebody get shot? Absolutely not. //www.politico.com/story/2019/08/11/steve-scalise-trump-mass-shootings-1458132
FACT CHECK:
Fourteen studies from other countries reported that individuals with severe psychiatric disorders committed an average of 9.3% of homicides.
New Study Suggests that Severely Mentally Ill Individuals Who Are Not Being Treated Are Responsible for 10 Percent of U.S. Homicides.
A study by the Washington Post of all homicides committed by severely mentally ill individuals reported by a single newspaper (The Washington Post) for the year 1992 found only 13 such homicides.
A study by the Justice Department of 2,655 homicides was drawn from a representative sample of 33 of the largest counties in the United States. The information was obtained from the files of prosecutors who examined the cases. They reported that 4.3 percent of the assailants had a history of mental illness.
Serious Persistent Mental Illness (SPMI) individuals with no substance abuse disorders were said to be responsible for no more than 3 percent of homicides, but individuals with SPMI and alcohol or drug abuse were responsible for between 9 and 15 percent of homicides.
AS FOR OVERALL ALCOHOL RELATED HOMICIDES:
Is Alcohol-Related Crime Common?
Alcohol-related crime isnt a new thing. But as the world evolves it has become more noticeable, due to heavily populated areas, CCTV and a developing binge drinking culture. Alcohol-related crime statistics state that in the United States, around 500,000 cases of alcohol violence are reported every year. And then theres the addition of the crimes that arent reported. https://alcorehab.org/the-effects-of-alcohol/alcohol-related-crimes/
A staggering 86% of homicides and 60% of sexual abuse or rape cases were under the influence of the drug. Also that, there were assaults, child abuse, and alcohol domestic violence charges, all of which were heavily influenced by the drug.
WASHINGTON President Trump sent Congress on Monday a record $4.75 trillion budget plan that calls for increased military spending and sharp cuts to domestic programs like education and environmental protection for the 2020 fiscal year.
Mr. Trumps budget, the largest in federal history, includes a nearly 5 percent increase in military spending which is more than the Pentagon had asked for and an additional $8.6 billion for construction of a wall along the border with Mexico.

President Trumps 2019 budget would have made it harder for millions of people with disabilities to afford the basics food on the table, a roof over their heads, and access to health care by cutting $72 billion over ten years from disability programs, including Social Security Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). And it would compound the hit for those with disabilities by also severely cutting Medicaid, food assistance, and housing vouchers. President Trump proposed these harmful cuts less than two months after signing into law massive tax cuts that overwhelmingly benefit those at the top.
The rejected budget broke the Presidents promise of not cutting Social Security benefits.

(82,849 posts)Sure, the tobacco industry wants to sell an addictive, deadly (but legal!) product, but do you think the CEO of Philip Morris wants to see any particular smoker die? Absolutely not! So don't blame Philip Morris or its marketing strategy aimed at teen-agers for creating a new generation of smokers to replace those who "age out" (isn't that a nice euphemism for "end their days coughing out bits and pieces of their lungs" ) of the market. That's a slippery slope, that is!

His statements about mental health referring to mass shooters as "mentally ill monsters" and suggesting "involuntary confinement" for some people with mental illness were off the mark, said Kevin Fischer, the executive director of the Michigan chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
He noted that there is little correlation between mental illness and violent killings.
"Study after study has shown us that is simply not true. Its actually more often the reverse," he said, in that people living with mental illness are far more likely to be victims of violence than perpetrators.
"Racism, hate, white supremacy are not diagnosable mental illnesses."
