White House seeks volunteers, musicians for Christmas celebrations

It's only August, but they need a little Christmas at the White House, with a call Monday for some seasonal help.

The White House is seeking volunteers to lend a hand in decorating 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. for the holidays, and to serve as greeters for annual open houses. A news release asks for potential volunteers to apply by Aug. 27.

The notice from Melania Trump's press office also is asking for musical gurus to carol their way through the White House. Musicians "including high school bands, choirs, and Christmas-themed entertainers" who want to perform during the holiday open houses in December can apply through Sept. 10.

The White House issued a similar casting call last year. In 2018, the White House hosted more than 100 open houses and welcomed in excess of 30,000 visitors throughout December.

(I was born in Arlington, right across the river from the Lincoln Memorial) and my brothers and sister were all, at one time or another, involved in their school bands or orchestras or glee clubs, etc.

All of them performed on the Ellipse during the holidays but never inside the grounds or inside the WH. My next older brother holds the record in our family, performing near the National Christmas Tree for 4 straight years back then.

So it should come as no surprise that they will have plenty of school bands, musical ensembles of various type and singers, be they choirs, glee clubs or what have you, participating in these events.

I don't really think the students will have any say in the matter whatsoever, but still, there will be plenty of groups that want to do this, of that I have no doubt.

They are going to perform at the White House, as opposed for the First Lady or Trumpy. It is a memory they won't forget, even though the current residents have all the class of a carbuncle.

Planning ahead, are they? That hasn't been much in evidence before now, with Trump just kind of winging even the most prosaic and traditional duties of the office. But it doesn't surprise me that they're looking for volunteers to do all kinds of heavy lifting for the White House to put on a show. I'm guessing that even some of the folks who expect to be paid for their service will find out they were volunteers all along.
