halfway normal person. He tries but it comes out all wrong.
Most psychopaths learn how to act normal. It's all just a show but they learn how to be charming and how to act in various scenarios.
Trump never learned. He just acts all wrong for the occasion. He is trying out smiling a lot right now. Last week he was trying to appear authoritative.
He's a mess.

(24,653 posts)Psychiatrists quibble about the distinctions within the anti-social personality disorder. Online articles about the differences between the two don't help much as you'll get wildly different information/opinions with every article you read. Knowing how to act normal and not caring about acting normal doesn't really play into the difference.
Personally, I think it's such a gray area open for debate, that it really doesn't matter all that much. Whether you have a psychopath or a sociopath in your life, it's going to be a nightmare and they aren't ever going to change. Having one in the White House is fucking hell.

(57,134 posts)difference is psychopaths are more able to adapt to society.
"But psychopaths can often be seen by others as being charming and trustworthy, holding steady, normal jobs. Some even have families and seemingly-loving relationships with a partner. While they tend to be well-educated, they may also have learned a great deal on their own."
"Sociopaths, in general, tend to be more impulsive and erratic in their behavior than their psychopath counterparts. While also having difficulties in forming attachments to others, some sociopaths may be able to form an attachment to a like-minded group or person. Unlike psychopaths, most sociopaths dont hold down long-term jobs or present much of a normal family life to the outside world."

This "presidency" is the functional equivalent of the episodes of Seinfeld, where George gets hired for jobs he has no qualifications for, and then goes in his office and sleeps under the desk all day.

(9,894 posts)that for whatever reason he doesnt know how to read social cues. This is more a neurology thing than a mental health issue and has nothing to do with sociopathy.
The examples are many, but that picture in El Paso with the baby and Mel where hes grinning and giving a thumbs up is exhibit A. No self-respecting sociopath would be that dense. The look on his face is tentative, he doesn't know what to do because socially he doesn't understand the situation or what is expected, so he defaults to what is the most common reaction when ones picture is being taken - he smiles. He plays the odds and does what would normally be the right thing to do when somebody points a camera at you, but he loses his bet because that wasnt a normal situation.
