Multiple far-right and extremist groups plan to protest in Portland, Oregon, this weekend where they may come face to face with anti-fascist counterdemonstrators.
The city's mayor has asked people to stay away, while police are preparing operational plans in case they need to intervene.
Here's what we know:
What's being planned
A gathering is being planned by a man called Joe Biggs, who used to work for Infowars, the fringe media company run by a right-wing conspiracist. Biggs has posted he wants the protest to "put an end to domestic terrorism," specifically left-wing anti-fascist extremists known as Antifa. The group is set to gather in downtown Portland.
Who's expected to attend
There are fears that the rally will attract many right-wing extremists, as well as Antifa counter-protests.

Joe Biggs must have brain damage. Antifa is not the ones behind the latest domestic terror incidents.

(82,849 posts)Some Thorns fans have expressed concern that the nazis might hang around and try to hassle the crowd. I don't think even the biggest bully in their bunch will really want to tangle with Portland soccer fans.

(41,990 posts)There are other ways to confront. Sponsor a free clinic. Have a concert with an anti-hate bent. Get your message out without doing the same thing the fascists are doing.

Antifa is decentralized. They don't exist per se. They are not going to sponsor a concert.

(41,990 posts)Im in Seattle. Theyve been a real problem here for years, and I never have thought much of their violent response, and sometimes just violence. I get your point though. They believe their POV and wont likely do otherwise. But they give the right talking points.

(33,345 posts)I'm in Seattle too. I'm downtown every work day. I've barely noticed their presence.
Are you thinking of the Anarchists who smash windows occasionally? That's not Antifa. There might be overlap, IDK.
Are you thinking of the dude who punched a Nazi at Westlake a couple years back? That was some random drug user, not Antifa.
Are you thinking of when the Antifa who showed up on Inauguration Day to protest Milo Yiannopoulis' UW speech, when Josh Dukes got shot point blank in the guts by Elizabeth Hokoana for taking away Mark Hokoana's Pepper Spray (that he was deploying on protestors)?
They're anything but a "real problem". They're our allies.
