My pet peeves are the people who don't understand how to use your and you're. This is a great teaching/learning tool to educate the ignorant trumpers and trumpettes.

It's orthography.

Write it in IPA and they're identical.

(Of course, it's better to drink IPA than write in it.)

"I shall lie down later for a nap". "I shall lay down my book before I get up." See the difference? The word "lay" takes an object, the verb "to lie" does not. Maybe some folks don't realize the verb "to lie" actually has 2 different meanings!

I hear this incorrect usage ALL the damn time on American television, and it's slowly creeping into Canada. Isn't this taught in school anymore? Makes me want to scream!

And another pet peeve is the indiscriminate use of the apostrophe -- my motto is "When in doubt, leave it out". But too many people are never in doubt, I guess......

'...the suspect broke through the manager's office door and drug the victim out.'

I checked for an update. The victim was found unhurt, and the suspect has been arrested.
