I am not religious and I am not an expert on the bible. I have known evangelicals are hypocrites for a long time. I know they are hypocrites for supporting a sinner, liar, criminal like Trump. I decided to do a little research to see what the bible says about what the evangelicals are doing. On its face it looked like to me they are committing a big sin by supporting Trump.
It is very clear in the bible that God and Jesus don't like liars. The Holy Spirit is called the Spirit of Truth. Committing Blaspheme against the Holy Spirit can be an unforgivable sin, eternal damnation.
Evangelicals are knowingly supporting Trump, a liar, a sinner, in the name of Jesus. You have to become a liar to support someone you know is a liar. They know what they are doing goes against the word of Jesus, however they justify what they are doing in the name Jesus. Jesus understands what we are doing, this is what he would want us to do.
Like I said, I am not religious, I am not an expert on the bible, I may be wrong. It looks like to me the evangelicals are committing blaspheme against God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit.

They have given up on their beliefs and are content to go down with the ship

(3,750 posts)Truth in what you say. The Law of Christ is to love our neighbor as we love ourselves. The Fruit of the Spirit begins with Love. All else is contingent on Love. It is supreme among Faith, and Hope.
I believe that the Spirit is Truth and that the Spirit is Love. There are many passages in the New Testament that support this view. Jesus says that there is no forgiveness for those who Blaspheme the Spirit. In the early days the Spirit worked openly. Many claimed that it was the Devil or demons working. Now the Spirit works through us by helping us love and do good works demonstrating that love.
I know that most here do not hold with religious belief. That is understandable because of what "Christians" have done and taught. At the end of the day, however, all that matters is faith working through love. I would hope that all liberals will agree that we should help one another in this world. That is sort of what liberalism is, or is supposed to be.
Jesus said that his followers would be identified by the love they had for one another. We have a way to go to get back to that identifier.

(4,379 posts)I am not religious, like many Americans. However we know we are judged by how we live our lives, not by how often we go to church.
I support religious freedom until it crosses certain lines. One line that can never be crossed is the line between religion and politics. Break that line and you are committing blaspheme. Politics by its nature is the great liar.

(3,750 posts)continue to hope. Better treatment for our world and for one another is obviously not dependent on the teachings of Christianity but a proper understanding of those teachings certainly does not stand in the way of progress. Just the opposite. So many have used the teachings as a cloak for their evil deeds. They crucify Christ afresh daily. Very sad. Love is the answer.

(16,079 posts)Those who continue to support Trump do it for access to power, for themselves...and for the love of money! They no longer possess a love of Christ and any of his teachings...they are the false prophets warned about in the Bible!
They will lie, cheat, steal, even call for the deaths of those that stand against them...they are betrayers of Christ's words and will suffer the worst tortures...which are reserved for those who betray the ones that they are meant to protect.

(14,858 posts)Even so, the majority of Christians voted for Trump in 2016, and most of those who did still support him today. Is there any reason to suspect that their faith isn't genuine? History has certainly shown us that Christians, as a group, don't behave any better than non-Christians do.

(1,902 posts)For example:
The Catholic vote:
White Catholics 37% Clinton - 60% Trump
Hispanic Catholics 67% Clinton - 26% Trump.
And he's well aware of this as is most evident in his policies.
On DU it's common practice to equate all Christians = Evangelicals.
That's not accurate at all - and I would think that DU being arguably better informed on the whole than
right wing forums could appreciate that Christianity isn't monolithic. But by all means - throw everybody in the
same bucket.
BTW, Pew (below) didn't even bother to poll non-white Evangelicals.

(14,858 posts)Of course they aren't monolithic - no one here has ever claimed that all Christians are right wingers or that all of them are Trump fans. Nevertheless, the majority of Christians, overall, voted for Trump in 2016, and most of those still enthusiastically support him today. Is there any reason to suspect that those Christians' faith isn't genuine?

(2,785 posts)The only way to blaspheme the Holy Spirit is to die in state of total unbelief in Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit doesn't testify of itself, but testifies of Christ. If lying were blaspheming the Holy Spirit then everyone would've blasphemed the Holy Spirit. Romans 3:4 God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged.

(4,379 posts)That is a different kind of lying. They are lying against their religion, what they believe in and then saying it's Ok for this made up reason. Like I said I am not an expert on the bible.
standingtall
(2,785 posts)but it is still not blaspheming the Holy Spirit which is the only unforgivable sin.
