"SNIP.....
In videos uploaded to Twitter, Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) received a chorus of boos and shouts from a town hall crowd after she tried to blame mass shootings on mental health issues, with one person shouting, Do something!
According to a report from Iowa Starting Line, the embattled Iowa Senator whose approval numbers have dropped, due in part to President Donald Trump, was pressed by one local teacher about changing gun laws so she can get back to the job she was hired for.
As part of my teacher training this past week, I was asked to listen to popping sounds and then determine if they were gun shots or not, asked Ellie Holland, a speech and language pathologist teacher. I was then asked to be trained to man a family reunification center to provide counseling to parents seeking their children following a catastrophic event.
My question to you today, Senator, is when can I plan to get back to trainings that simply teach children to read and write? she pressed.

Snip-"Though Ernst scheduled her Polk County forum at 7:30 AM on a Saturday, a crowd of about 150 showed up to the suburban Wallace Elementary School auditorium. About two dozen Ernst supporters, decked out in campaign t-shirts, gathered in the parking lot beforehand and cheered and encouraged Ernst as she spoke.
One of the most striking moments came early on with the second questioner, a teacher who works at the school.

(171,074 posts)so she was hoping no one would show up? I'm so proud of these people for being there; she didn't get off/away so easily. I hope she really considers their concerns, especially the teachers'. That's no way to run a school.

(50,279 posts)to be prevented from buying a gun you need to have been adjudicated mentally ill in a court of law. For that to happen, we have to wait until a person commits a violent gun crime, goes to trial, pleads insanity and is found to be so and sent off to the happy hotel. There are rare instances when a person is deemed mentally ill prior to committing a crime, but it doesn't happen often enough to make a difference. Most of the recent shooters are your basic aggrieved, young white guys who think if they're miserable the rest of the world should be miserable, too. That's not nuts. The only way to keep them from possessing a gun is to put restrictions on gun ownership like background checks, insurance requirement, licensing and basic firearms training. And the only way to give their potential victims a fair chance to survive is limiting ammunition by both quantity and quality (no hollow points) and the weapons that are only made for one thing: killing human beings.

(6,182 posts)I doubt if it would have any effect on preventing potential mass murder's from getting guns. How do you demonstrate that a person is "mentally ill"?
Are the Republicans suggesting anyone who wants to buy and assault weapon first undergo a rigorous mental health examination?
I think it would be a better idea to apply that criteria to potential candidates for President, Vice-president, and Congress.
Maybe we could weed out the racists, hate-mongers, narcissists, meglo-maniacs, and mentally incompetents prior to their getting on the ballot.
But, in the immortal words of Dirty Harry, "that's not going to happen."

(118,295 posts)Americans have not been impressed by Trumps response to recent mass shootings in Dayton and El Paso. By 52%-36%, the poll shows they disapprove of how he has handled the aftermath of those tragedies. A 54% majority says that the language the president uses in his speeches and on Twitter bears significant responsibility for the shootings ...

President Carter was dogged by two things in 1980 - US hostages in Iran and inflation.
The GOP is turning a blind eye to the danger of assault rifles and thinks the problem is a marketing problem - blame the Democrats.

Looks like the NRAs second favorite senator behind Moscow Mitch is getting her bona fides in for big donations from the gun lobby in early. They staked her to the tune of $3.1 million in 2014. Perhaps the NRA can do some educational advertising under the rules established by SCOTUS in Citizens United like they did for her in 2014.
At times Ernst sounds like a robot repeating right wing talking points without even seeming to understand what she is saying. Once again like a good right winger she repeats the lie that Chicago is the murder capital of the US despite gun sales restrictions. A little googling would have revealed to Ernst that her claim was false ...
You get the idea, folks. She does not want to protect you. She does not want to protect your children. She does not want to protect your grandchildren. She DOES, however, WANT TO PROTECT THE NRA! ...

(9,426 posts)"representative" only protects herself and her donations. Just like the rest of the gop. She should have stuck to castrating pigs. Or else taken that special talent to her senate seat, and her fellow piggish gop members. Does she still own the bread wrappers she used to wear (yeah, right) over her shoes in winter?

(40,212 posts)Her sole purpose of serving in the United States Senate is to protect the gun industry. She is the worst kind of hack. She got elected on an "ol' shucks I'm just a farm girl" campaign of bullshit.
She is a terrible person and the people of Iowa should vote her out of office with a humiliating loss.
