Assault weapons are just semi autos with fancy stocks. The real issue are the large magazines.

The problem is there's probably close to a billion high capacity magazines in this country and they don't have serial numbers or any form of registration. They also can now be made with a 3D printer.

Only solution I can see is ban them, grandfather those already owned (to pass 5th amendment scrutiny), prohibit sale or transfer, run stings/malware to trap those who try to print them, and do a rolling buyback with a very generous payout. Probably some other ugly complications that will need to be worked out. Was talking about this with my gun nut BiL and he was going on about the problems of the same magazines having different capacities depending on the type of ammo used.

(not incld suicides) ....and stairs and ladders kill more then either unfortunately.
