Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Thursday issued a forceful defense of the legislative filibuster, the Senate's 60-vote threshold that Democratic lawmakers and presidential candidates have expressed a new willingness to abolish.
The legislative filibuster is directly downstream from our founding tradition. If that tradition frustrates the whims of those on the far left, it is their half-baked proposals and not the centuries-old wisdom that need retooling, the Kentucky Republican wrote in a New York Times op-ed.
No Republican has any trouble imagining the laundry list of socialist policies that 51 Senate Democrats would happily inflict on Middle America in a filibuster-free Senate, McConnell wrote. In this country, radical changes face a high bar by design. It is telling that todays left-wing activists would rather lower that bar than produce ideas that can meet it.
Some 2020 Democrats have said on the campaign trail that they would be open to killing the filibuster, with Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) remarking that everything stays on the table. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) recently echoed that sentiment when asked whether Democrats would abolish the filibuster if they reclaim the chamber in 2020.

Without the filibuster McConnell no longer would be relevant.

(82,849 posts)Sounds like Mitch doesn't want a dose of his own medicine. It also sounds like Mitch isn't very confident about retaining his position as Majority Leader.
Of all the folks claiming to have a finger on the pulse of our nation's political life, I would say that incumbent office holders are among the most savvy and tuned-in. If Mitch McConnell is making worried noises about the Senate, you can bet he's gotten a lot of very disturbing news about Republican prospects in 2020. Let's see if we can't bring his worst fears home to him.

(7,871 posts)It only serves to prevent Democrats from accomplishing big goals that would make the American populace more eager to vote for them.
Republicans bypass it to push through anything they want -- the Bush tax cuts, the Trump tax cuts, their two Supreme Court nominations, etc.
If you eliminate the filibuster, it allows Democrats to pursue and enact a truly Democratic agenda. It may allow Republicans to push through some of their more draconian stances (e.g., restrictions on abortion), but if they do that, the public would only turn on them severely and we could roll back whatever they passed and pass even more legislation on our own.
Fuck McConnell -- end the filibuster.
