The woman in the video, who Welch identified as an employee of Boones Camp Event Hall, told her that we dont do gay weddings or mixed race weddings due to our Christian belief.
Okay, were Christians as well, Welch replied before asking, So, what in the Bible tells you that?
Well, I dont want to argue my faith, the woman said.
Welch then asked the woman to clarify her reasoning.
Okay. So thats your Christian belief, right?, Welch asked.
Yes maam.

(81,467 posts)Not really Christian as in followers of Christ. Nope. These are followers of what they believe are some cockamamie man-made conveniently and selfishly politicized distortions of the Message of Christ - to accommodate their personal prejudices and earthly biases and judgmentalisms. Its the very fallible and deeply suspect teachings of man, not of Jesus.
Ye olde long-ago Catholic school inmate here. In my opinion and in-person witness throughout my foundational Wonder years, we were taught that the Teachings of Jesus were not exclusionary. He intended His Word out there to be for EVERYONE. From the exalted to the excoriated. BOTH the wanted and unwanted. The in crowd AND the outsiders and the banished and the otherwise-excluded.
Jesus would not have turned that prospective bride and groom away. He would not have judged. Certainly not the way this venue management did.
The real challenge, though, is to follow His Teachings ALL the way out. And thats the hard part. Because were judging, too, when we condemn the perceived offenders here.
But DAYUM thats hard. Thats the almost-impossibly hard part. Its damn hard not to call a spade a spade. I struggle with that every minute of every day (particularly these days!), and I have a very long track record of failure - well-documented here. Jesus said we must love everyone, including our enemies. And thats DAMN HARD. The whole hate the sin, not the sinner thing. And I fail at that every doggone day.
Its hard NOT to hate and/or despise our republi-CON enemies. Its hard not to hate who and what they are. Its certainly easy to hate what they do.

It clarified that the god who is omniscient and omnipotent, was CLUELESS when arranging for the Jews to be chosen and the Arabs to be the bastards... causing the deaths of countless millions. Guess he blew that one BIG TIME.
The bible is a big, thick, heavy book. Makes a GREAT doorstop.
Not very useful for anything else, except for control, manipulation, delegating the male as superior (after all god, himself, had a penis), the female as subservient. And without that steaming pile of excrement, mankind would never have been able to figure out that we should treat others as we would like to be treated.

Let's see a blizzard of press releases from pastors and other Christian leaders, making it perfectly clear that they don't agree with this behavior and consider it shameful that any Christians act this way. Let's see millions of letters to the editor, blog entries, etc. from Christian laypeople, expressing the same. Let's see Christian churches posting similar sentiments on their church signs, and on the front pages their church websites. Let's see yard signs in front of the houses of Christians, specifically condemning this. Let's see Christians picketing outside this venue.

(22,270 posts)The UMC is most likely going to split. Those rules were always there. There was an alternative proposal which was to let each congregation work out its own path on this issue, and that proposal was voted down, leaving the original rules from the Book of Discipline in place. I believe a couple of additional bits were thrown in to make it uglier. The conservative faction that has stirred this all up is absolutely vile...and they are clearly soiling the nest to force the progressive congregations to do the leaving instead of just walking out themselves.
We just found out that the Judicial Court of the UMC has ruled that congregations which leave the current UMC for a newly formed denomination will definitely be allowed to retain all of their church property. One of the big roadblocks was the fact that all church properties actually belong to the Annual Conference where the buildings are located. If a congregation disbanded, the conference would get their property. Now that the church can keep its property, we may see congregations take action after the 2020 conference. Our church has the largest footprint in downtown Fort Worth - developers would be salivating over our parking lots alone!
Also, some of those rules regarding punishments for pastors who perform same sex marriage and or are openly gay ...welll how they are enforced really depends on where you are.
There is supposed to be a suspension of pay for the minister in question .... which could be at least a year and basically the minister can't really perform his/her job.
However in the Western Jurisdiction they are fining the ministers like $5 and they are allowed to continue doing their jobs. Also, many individual congregations are identifying as 'reconciling' https://rmnetwork.org/ The rebellion is growing.
Most of the things which happened at General Conference were due to the votes of the African delegations, and a very insidious campaign run by a far right sub set within the UMC. Every 4 years this gets voted on and every 4 years the vote gets tighter. The Gen Con in 2019 was a special one; the regularly scheduled one will be in 2020. It's gonna be interesting!!!

(1,358 posts)As someone who considers myself to be a Christian (Roman Catholic), I think that it would be easy for me to say that these individuals are not "real" Christians - but I also think that this would be dishonest and dangerous to do so.
To me, a Christian is someone who believes in the divinity of Christ...so if they hold that belief, then they are real Christians.
The question then becomes, how do you live your life and treat others based on that belief? Does that belief cause you to see others as inferior? Does it cause you to hate and exclude others?
Or does it prompt you to care and reach out to others? To show love and concern, rather than scorn and contempt?
That is why I firmly believe that if there is a god, he/she/it cares less about WHAT we believe, but rather how we treat others.
Anyway, those are just my thoughts.
Wishing you well and peace.

While I dislike that they do this, I also came to the conclusion long ago that the majority of mainstream media are no longer in the business solely to report news. Unfortunately they're mostly owned by big corporations who are in the business to gain power and make $$$.
Most gospel based Christians I know lead caring, quiet lives of "love thy neighbour", "judge not" and the "Golden Rule. They feel they should share their beliefs by being an example of what Jesus taught, not by trying to force their beliefs on others like headline grabbing RW evangelicals do. Media will use their stories as fillers on slow news days but sadly, since TrumpliCons were bought and manipulated into power, those days seem to be very rare, closing in on extinction.

Then they declare that corporations are people and have all the rights of people. Then they declare that religious belief gives both corporations and people the right to discriminate against anyone for any reason by just claiming religious freedom. And they opened the floodgates to unlimited money by groups pushing these backward ideas.
This is what happens when you have a court basing its opinions on their personal beliefs rather than the law. If the argument of originalism is used, as it has been by this court, then show me where the Constitution says that corporations are people, show me where it says one religious sects beliefs can be used to make laws affecting people not of those beliefs.

(754 posts)The concept of the court is bad - at least since Marbury v Madison - maybe originally.
This court acts as an unelected, unaccountable legislature.
It picks and chooses what it acts on - it doesn't have the capacity needed.
The time for judicial review is at the beginning of a law's life, not at some random time when long in place.
There are some libertarians who have developed these ideas. I've come to see a lot of wisdom in this critique.
Sometimes we have courts that support our ideas, and sometimes not. I think it is important to see that the concept is bad regardless.
I don't think it's ever solved any problems. It has temporarily stopped debate and maybe the benefit is stopping the bleeding or giving everybody a time out, but it doesn't do anything useful for our social ability to compromise. We've come to see it as a substitute. It's a bad one.
Lonestarblue
(10,074 posts)The SC takes only about 2% seconds of cases from the appeals courts, which leaves a lot of power in the hands of the appeals courts. We have 13 US Appeals Courts, including the one for DC and the one for the Federal Circuit. Currently each SC justice oversees more than one district. That a lot of cases to oversee and most likely affects the number of cases the SC itself can take on. Your idea of reviewing laws quickly before they cause harm is important, yet it takes years for bad laws to get a hearing and they may go into effect unless a lower court judge issues a stay.
I would be in favor of 11 SC justices, with the Chief Justice overseeing both the Federal Circuit and the DC courts, as he does now. Two of the smaller (or less active) appeals courts might also be combined under one justice. There are so many more cases now, yet the number of SC justices has not changed in decades. I think we might have a more balanced court with more people on it so that one or two rabid ideologues are not able to do so much damage, as I believe Antonin Scalia did.

Here is hoping that this results in what the Pharisaical Right wishes, religion in the public square. Except that it will be delving into doctrine in front of the SCOTUS. It is time to delve into these alleged deeply held beliefs. On a side note a corporation cannot have deeply held beliefs because it is not alive. The management of a corporation can have beliefs and thus the management must be queried as regards these beliefs.
Thus either religious beliefs be taken at ending where providing goods and services to the public begins or we have little choice but to venture where the religionists really do not want to go.

It also says this protection is available only to religious organizations. Race isnt mentioned. The law is designed to allow discrimination against LBGTQ couples. It would be nice if an unintended consequence of this is to have the entire law struck down, but there is unfortunately an opening for a narrow decision that avoids that.

It's a very different legal question even though morally all forms of such discrimination are reprehensible. Here is a pretty good piece by an ACLU attorney: https://www.religiousfreedominstitute.org/cornerstone/2016/6/30/the-truth-about-religious-employers-and-civil-rights-laws

One section prohibits discrimination on the basis of race in places of public accommodation, such as restaurants and hotels.

If the foundation of your belief system is delusional it means you have essentially been robbed of your free will. All your actions are predicated on a bunch of lies. Find enlightenment and the truth by retreating from untruth as frightening as that might be.
